A few questions:

  • Who is the manufacturer of your slow computer,
  • and what is the model number?
  • What Operating System and version is it running?
  • How much RAM does it have?
  • How much free space is left on its hard drive C:?

Ah ha, thanks rshaffer61. :D

I see she is running Windows XP Home SP3 and it looks like it may be an Acer. All that's left then is "2. and what is the model number?"

--

Hard drive - That s-l-o-w 4,200 RPM "Fujitsu MHT2040AT_PL" hard drive is a big part of the problem. And, the fact that it is 40GB means it is getting pretty long in the tooth and may be developing mechanical problems. As cheap as hard drives are these days, I'd look into replacing it with at least a minimum of a 7,200 RPM drive.

Memory - Bumping the RAM up to at least 2GB always seems to help speed up an XP box.

Of course both of these upgrades will only work if the computer is capable of handling them ... which we should be able to determine with a model number. ;)

Click Start > Run, type in msinfo32.exe and press [Enter]. (This should load "System Information”). With "System Summary" selected on the left, you should be able to see the full model number to the right of "System Model" in the right pane.

Speedwise, about the best you can do with that golden oldie is bump it up from 512MB of RAM to 1280MB, upgrade that 4200 RPM IDE drive to a bit faster 5400 RPM drive, and then do a clean re-install of the Operating System. Cost would be between $100-$150. (At that price, I not sure it'd be worth it. :D).
