cant connect to internet wirelessly. unidentifed network

I have a pavillion dv6700. I can connect fine via ethernet. but only get local via wireless. need help. my os is vista.

Try disabling wireless security on the router (this is only temporary for testing purposes) then try wireless access again.

If it works like that, perhaps your laptop's wireless device is not compatible with the encryption-type the router is using
when wireless security is enabled, in which case you'll have to set the router to one of the other encryption-types (WEP, for example).
