Hello,

I've been trying to get rid of all the spyware/malware on my computer for over a month now... I know... I'm not very computer savvy. But I've found that sites like this are the most helpful. I'm having a lot of trouble with Elitum.elitebar. I went to symantec and mcafee's manual removal instructions to no avail and have used mcafee's virus scan both the online one and the one on my computer as well as spybot and i used to have ad-aware but i've foudn that spybot works better. I've used Hijack This as a last resort, i tried to learn from others who had the same problem but was afraid to play around with the registry... bad experiences. Anyhow, here are my logs, any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

HI LAMAROE,

Here we go with your fix.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

1. Please download LSPFix from here.
2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
3. Check the I know what I'm doing box.
4. In the Keep box you may see one or more instances of 'ipclsp.dll' .
5. Select every instance of 'ipclsp.dll' and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
6. When you are done click Finish>>.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection as well as some other nasties. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY HERE
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they are there. Some may have been removed by earlier procedures.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'ipclsp.dll' missing
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

now using windows explorer locate the following files/folders and delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmewzok.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ELITESJE32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, so we can sort out any remnants

The results of the bitdefender online scanner are saved as attachments, as i must have saved in the wrong format and am unsure as to how to convert it to readable format. if you cannot read it please inform me and i will do another scan, but i must say I'm a bit confuzzled by the results of the scans. I have never seen these viruses/malware before whether it be because mcafee wasn't turning them up even in safe mode or that these have just recently infected my system. Either way, it adds to my frustration because I figured that a firewall and regular runnings of spybot and mcafee would ensure i was not infected with new stuff at least. could it be that the couple infections i had before were remanifesting themselves or even attracting new malware? I only ask to figure out if the current protection i have is working right minus the fact that i was already infected when i got the current virus and spyware protection. spybot, netveda security net and mcafee virus scanner was the protection i was using before downloading all the other spyware tools mentioned in your fix post.

Also, after running spybot again to figure out if the elitum bar was gone, it turned up a registry value for it meaning that it's still not gone! >_<

Hi Lameroe,

The bit defender scan is ok, i can read it fine, it's done it's job. it searches deeper than mcafee and so i anticipated it finding several things.

The tools we have used search different things and that is why we have found things that Spybot does not find.

With regards elite, although there is debris in the registry, it is no longer an active threat. You could try this elite toolbar removal tool Here

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

;) THANK YOU!

I'm sending waves of good karma, love, prayers to God, etc. year way in lieu of paypal because I don't use it and actually fear it thanks to www.paypalsucks.com.

Couldn't help but take a stab at windows, eh? Can't blame ya though :tazz:

One more question, though. Under "Add/Remove" programs there is something that I consistently cannot remove entitled "Rio Music Manager" but when I look it up on symantec and even google, it turns out to be a legitimate (or so it seems) site and service... it just doesn't want to leave my computer. I get the message that it's stored in a temporary folder: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_isF333\ specifically but cleaning out temporary folders and using CleanUp! don't help neither have the other 89 scans from all the spyware removal tools i now have.

and a final question: should i/do i need to keep programs like cws shredder, lsp fix, hijack this, spsehjfix, and aboutbuster5 on my computer? If i'm not mistaken, with the exception of hijack this, those tools are all made for the specific removal of a certain trojan or virus and their uninstallation would be best? (I have low memory on my computer and would like to remove any unnecessary or no longer useful programs, that's all)

Thanks for such a prompt response!

Hi again,

Set PC to show hidden files, use windows explorer and check C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder...can you locate the particular file and get the full file path...ie the full name to it?

:tazz:
my system settings have been set to "show hidden files" and "disable system restore" since i started the process of malware removal. i did search for the temporary folders using "search" because "windows explorer" turns up "my documents"... which is suspicious to me. nothing turned up though under temporary files, and again CleanUp! doesn't resolve the problem.

actually the message i get when i try to remove it from the programs list is that the installation source is unavailabe and that it's stored in C:\windows\temp\_isF33 but searching for it in temp turns up nothing.

thanks again for your prompt response.
