Hello All,
recently I get a BSOD when trying to view a video on for example youtube. I get it for all video's. WhoCrashed gives the following analysis:
===
On Tue 15-2-2011 10:00:51 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini021511-02.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: watchdog.sys (watchdog+0x925)
Bugcheck code: 0x1000008E (0xFFFFFFFFE0000001, 0xFFFFFFFFA2198925, 0xFFFFFFFF9C79B880, 0x0)
Error: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\watchdog.sys
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: Watchdog Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode program generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.
===
What does this mean? Is it a driver? Or is something wrong with my XP itself?
In general I can use the system all right as long as I do not try to view a video.

Please help! Thanks, Alexander

Hj Alexander314 -
Please do the following as it will provide us with more information than the mini dump.

Please download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thank You -

Watchdog.sys is used to record display driver-related errors, assertions, warnings, and events to a log in memory.

Have you checked the drivers - Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and looked at the lower part of the irems listed there around video etc. to check there are no Red or Yellow ! marks - Click on the + sign at Sound video and game controllers to open the items -
Failing any discovery in there , you may need to first run check disk - An easy way is copy and paste this code below
CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30
into Run Box , close all programs and it will reboot your system in 30 seconds then run a full 5 stage check / repair - This should take about 30 to 45 mins on most systems (unless you have major problems)

Thank You

I did the drivers check: nothing wrong there. Then I did the CHKDSK on C: and this took about 2.5 hours as it is a large disk. No errors found, that is to say after I came back to the pc it had restarted and no messages to be seen. Is there a log file somewhere that shows the results of the CHKDSK?

Thanks, Alexander

Hi again -

To open Event Viewer and view the log:

Go to Start > Run > and type eventvwr and press the <ENTER> key.

In the left pane, click on Application.

In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically.

Look in the Source column for "Winlogon", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check.

Double-click on that entry to view the log.

Click on the "copy" button to copy the log to the clipboard.

Thank You -
EDIT - We need to look deeper in the Device Manager -
Go Start, right click My Computer, click Properties on the window that opens click Hardware, then click device manager.
Then click the view tab and click to show hidden devices.
Please post details of the warnings against which device and when you open that what is the message. You open it by double clicking on the entry.

First I have to confes that with help of my son I installed a new driver for the video card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO), and although the installation didn't complete, the effect is that I can now see videos without a BSOD.
Second thing is that I have a Dutch version of XP and the log text is thus in Dutch. Here it is:

Please post details of the warnings against which device and when you open that what is the message. You open it by double clicking on the entry.

Third: I found none of the devices faulty - there were about 200 of them I believe! No warnings other than "the device works correctly" or "there is no driver for this device".

Thank you for your patience, Alexander

This may be the easiest solution for the problem -
That is why I wanted you to look at items listed there around video etc. to check there are no Red or Yellow ! marks -
Keep trying to find all the updated drivers for the new card (the makers site is usually the best) -
Please post back if the problem is not solved and we can only try to help you -

It is not a new card - it is a new driver I have now. Things seem OK, though the installation did not finish completely (I tried twice).

Still it might be a good idea to get a new card. The demand on the card is not heavy: I mainly use Photoshop and that kind of software. No games.

Thanks for the help. Regards, Alexander

Still it might be a good idea to get a new card.

I found that my card was not doing very well on what should have been "average size" games, so I replaced it with a NVIDIA card -
The result was an improvement, but my system still needed extra RAM and other things updated to make it perform better -
It is still a work in progress - (most likely I will never finish it now that I have a 4G Win 7 unit also - with a 1G video card) -
You do not believe the change once you have a fully upgraded system :D -
Try a new card and I think the screen problems will be fully solved -

Thank You -
