The slot where the ethernet cable goes into is a dodgy the light doesn't flash I've gotta push down on it for it to connect at the moment I've got my computer at a angle so the wire hasn't moved. Does it sound like I need a new slot fit in. What are they called Its connected to the motherboard and its not a network card.

My computer is Vista 32 bit any other information you need?

Ok i opened computer up its attached to the motherboard in a silver box.

Inside where the cable goes these like plastic silvering wrapper (it looks like that) is that meant to be in there? I check downstairs computer and it doesn't have it in there. I cant get a picture of it as i have no camera at the mo

That foil is definitely not supposed to be in there. I would suggest that you remove it and see if that solves the problem. If not, can you try a different cable? That will allow us to determine if the problem lies with the cable or with the port itself.
