Are you able to run ad-aware again? This information will help us help you.

Could you please post the log here.

Logs are stored in:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-aware\Logs\.
There are in order of date,

Make sure you have all the log posted

(The Application Data is a hidden folder, so you will need to show hidden files and folders and for Windows 98*admin users your logs are stored in C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\ )

This sometimes takes 2-3 posts to get it all posted. You will know you are at the end when you see the "Summary of this scan" information has been posted.

When you have posted your log here, Team Lavasoft can advise on what to do next. Please post back if you have any questions or other problems.

Good luck

Logfile removed: Being helped without the use of Ad-aware.

If further assistance is needed, try scanning using the full system scan option

Unfortionatly, I didn't see anything in your log that could have broken your computer this way. Lets try another program.

Please download HiJack This from here.

Do not fix anything yet.

Please post a log file from a HJT scan. It provides us with detailed information about your system.

What is the error message that you get when trying to open an exe file? Does it ask you to chose a program to open it with?

Exefix If you can download this file to your desktop skip to step 3.

1. Please copy and paste this information into notepad. You should be able to open it by either:
clicking start - all programs - accessories - notepad
clicking start - run - type "notepad" (without the quotes)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile]
@="Application"
"EditFlags"=hex:38,07,00,00
"TileInfo"="prop:FileDescription;Company;FileVersion"
"InfoTip"="prop:FileDescription;Company;FileVersion;Create;Size"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open]
"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\DropHandler]
@="{86C86720-42A0-1069-A2E8-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\PEAnalyser]
@="{09A63660-16F9-11d0-B1DF-004F56001CA7}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\PifProps]
@="{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ShimLayer Property Page]
@="{513D916F-2A8E-4F51-AEAB-0CBC76FB1AF8}"

2. Now click file - save as - then type exefix.reg for the file name - then select "all types" for the line save as type - finally, click desktop (on the left) then save. Now close notepad.

3. The file exefix should be on your desktop. Double click it, a box will appear asking you if you want to merge the data with your registry, click yes.

Try to open an exe file again and tell us the results.
Good luck. :tazz:

Sorry about that, heres the correct infromation.

Could you be a little more clear about what you mean by

it just brings up the open with box

Do you mean when you try to open the Exefix or when you try to open an exe file?

When it says open with, choose to browse for a program to open it with. The program you want is at C:\windows\regedit.exe. I realize this is an exe file, but I think it may work. I hope this works, and I am still trying to figure out what caused this problem on your system.

Please follow the instructions located in Step Five: Posting a Hijack This Log. Post your HJT log as a reply to this thread, which has been relocated to the Malware Removal Forum for providing you with further assistance.

Kindly note that it is very busy in the Malware Removal Forum, so there may be a delay in receiving a reply. Please also note that HJT logfiles are reviewed on a first come/first served basis.
