I've recently came across an old posting labeled "Explorer.exe missing + Blank Desktop [CLOSED]"
I have the same issues with my HP Pav. Laptop. running Windows XP.
I have followed the previous post and installed and ran FixO.bat, recorded a HiJackThis log, and am running malware bytes as we speak.
The initial desktop items (start menu, icons) were missing on the Admin account, and my personal account.
After running the FixO.bat, I was only able to retrieve desktop items and start menu on my personal account running in Safe Mode.

The same problem still exists when I reboot and try to log into my ac[bleep]s in normal mode.
