Hi,

I'm intending to uninstall all the programming developers tools and programs that I have installed for my school and I'm having trouble identifying which are the important ones that I should keep. I'm worried I might delete something that is required to run my system normally.

Is there a program I can run that prints out all the programs that I currently have installed so you can tell me which are the required ones that is runtime mandatory and which are the tools and programs that I can delete?

As a general rule anything that shows up in Add/Remove programs or Programs & Features will not bring the operating system down. You should be able to get rid of anything you need to with no issues.

Thanks for your help! Does this apply to hotfixes as well? I do know for sure hotfixes are windows mandatory patches though I may be wrong. :s

Is there a way to copy and paste the whole list of installed programs on my laptop so that you guys can have a look and give me a heads up to what I should delete to ease up my laptop for some space and increase the speed/performance?

Hotfixes are security updates and should not be removed unless there is a major issue, which in 95% of cases there is not.

Hello! I'm not sure what your asking?? If your wanting to post all your programs that on your C drive on Geeks to Go, you can do that by Clicking on System Information. Then click Software Environments. Then click on Program Groups.
Select All=Copy. Then you can paste all your programs in a post. I don't know why you would want to do that. Your the only one that can decide which programs you want to keep. Getting rid of programs you don't use is a good way to free up disk space, but that has to be your decision. If it's related to windows I would leave it alone. Hope this helps. Geeks to Go don't know which programs you want to keep. Keep the ones you use and ditch the rest. I would back up my OS before doing any major deleting.

Geeks to Go don't know which programs you want to keep.

That's a little too black & white for me.

We can definitely help Jiber here in making recommendations why we would recommend keeping certain programs, or removing others.

@Jiber,
If you post a list of the programs you have installed on your PC I can help you with recommendations on what programs to keep and what programs to remove.

Regards,
Olrik

Hello sorry! I don't understand black & white. My post has all my programs. I know this is not my thread and I don't want to hi jack it. I just don't understand how you would know which ones I need and which ones to thrash. I guess I don't understand what the OP is asking. I wanted to show him how to copy and paste all his programs without having to type each one separately. I meant no harm nor was saying Geeks to Go couldn't help.Geeks to Go can always help. Thank you!!

I just don't understand how you would know which ones I need and which ones to thrash.

What we do is let people know what different programs do, so they can make the determination if it's something they use or need. We don't tell them to just delete stuff. If it's something pretty general, like Office, Adobe, Firefox, or something else they most likely use, then we won't suggest they remove it. If it's a specialized program that might have a limited application, then we can certainly provide a description of what it's used for. In this particular, jiber is looking to uninstall programs he used for school, so it will probably be easier to identify them.

Hello sari.
Thanks for your reply. I guess I didn't understand what the OP was asking. I know you can't copy and paste from Add/Remove, but you can from Windows Explorer, if that will help.I thought he was asking for a easy way to list all his programs. They should all be in programs folder in Explorer. And now I'll mind my own business because I have no clue what programs you would have from school;we didn't have computers when I was in school :D . I'm going to watch this thread, it sounds interesting :D

I would actually suggest to jiber to do a couple screen shots of the add/remove program group.

A great program for that is Gadwin Printscreen Free. This program allows you to do screen shots of a full window or you can take only what you want. You can also save it in multiple formats.

Are those Acer programs a mandatory for regular running on my laptop as well?

I just want to clean up some space so I can get some new programs that I intend to install to use.. And I'm running on "red alert" hdd now so thats why I want to clear up things that I've got from school. List any potential programs that may take up space too. If I need it I'll prolly not uninstall it so no harm listing it out too! :D

Also, does registry entries take up much space? Any difference between using the uninstaller from the program folder itself and using the "Programs and Features" in control panel?

First off it will be difficult for us to give you exactly what to remove. We can make recommendations though.

What does

And I'm running on "red alert" hdd now

mean?

Some things you can definitely uninstall are:

1. Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 6
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java 6 Update 24 is available so then you can uninstall Java™ 6 Update 21

2. HijackThis 2.0.2 This should only be used by experienced users (it is also not used on Geeks to Go and is also not kept up to date).

My next concern is the multiple instances of some programs (they all have the same name). They could be separate installs or could be updates to the same program.
Unless you can click on separate links to each one of them to start a program, then I tend to believe they are some sort of updates.

Leave anything dealing with Acer because it is essential.

DO NOT USE ANY REGISTRY CLEANERS!

The bar that states how much free and used space that you see on your C:\ drive or D:\ drive at 'My Computer', it is red and has been red for some time already. Every time I delete some programs it reflects on my C:\ drive that I've got maybe a GB back. But after awhile the GB just gets used up again. I'm suspecting a malware or some kind of virus eating up my space..

Yes recommendations is what I'm looking for in fact. I am well aware that no one knows what I do not want and not want..

I used to be from G2GU and that is why I have HJT.

My C:/ drive is clogged up with many files that I do not know.. things like:

TmpA466826237
mpg2splt.ax
mshtml.dll
bthservsdp.dat
iBSS.n81ap
DUMP4920.tmp
hiberfil.sys
pagefile.sys
3d0a2ff1-382d-44a8-b238-eb8992995.txt
-20080226.log
vcredist_x86.log

Some files takes up much space but most of it just a KB or two..

I'm wondering though, could it be all those Malware and Spyware cause my drive to clutter up as well?
