I re-installed Windows XP a day ago and it worked fine the first time. Now I start it up and it gets to the XP loading screen and freezes or gets past it and the screen stays black. I started it in Safe Mode and it worked, but because its Safe Mode I cant do everything I want to. I formatted so i cant restore it. Please help...

Try in Safe Mode to do the following and then once done reboot back to normal mode. Does it now work?

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

What are the hardware specs for this machine?

When was the last time you did hardware PM on this machine?

What software have you installed ?

what is the antivirus version and definition dates?

just a few things to know before we can get into a serious discussion about your machine.

k mod it didnt work. still freezing at startup screen. and schutzengel, i havnt installed any software what so ever. i havnt connected it to anything either

then you are probably looking at some form of a hardware issue...


be it heat or a device performing less than optimally ... and pending failure.

please post the hardware specs you have. and if you have not done it yet CLEAN THE BOX...

Also what OS installation disk did you use to install with?
Did it come with the system?
Is it a installation disk or a recovery disk? OEM or retail?
Being that it starts in Safe mode would indicate a driver issue because safe mode loads generic drivers where normal mode loads the drivers specific for your hardware.
When you say it sometimes it gets past the loading screen and then shows a black screen, does it show a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left side?
Did you install drivers for a sound card or a video card?
Is there a drivers disk for the motherboard?
You did no windows update when you first loaded it?

ok, i re-installed windows on another drive. seems to be working, but thats what happened last time i installed. see what its like tomorrow.

its an installation disk, retail i think, it didnt come with the system though. got given the system from a friend. so i dont have the driver disks for any of the hardware.

it doesnt automatically start in safe mode; i started it up in safe mode to see if it worked.

no blinking cursor, but most of the time it froze on the loading screen.

havnt installed any drivers or updates.

You will definately want to install drivers startig with the chipset driver

from there everything builds on the core chipset.

From your description this is a custom build I take it?
Seems to be a desktop from all indications also.
I agree starting with the motherboard chipset is the first driver to be installed and then you move on to the video, nic and then sound last.

k pc still working. one problem. it seems to be lagging quite a bit. now is this just because i havn't installed my drivers yet, or could it be something else?

you will not get even close to the full performance out of your machine until you install all of the drivers ...

[2:] Click on the icon it creates and let it run
[3:] I need the following information from it.
[4:] First click on the Mainboard tab at the top of the window and give me Manufacturer and Model number it shows
[5:] Click on the Memory tab and give me the Type and Size of memory it shows.
[6:] Click on the SPD tab and get me the Max Bandwidth line information.
