Hi! I'm one of the most computer illiterate people I know. It'd be really terrific if somebody could help me with this recent influx of Aurora pop-ups and spyware. I've never had a problem with this until a few days ago. Please help. Here's my Hijack This log file:

Hi silly_putty,

My name is Trevuren and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums..

You have a couple of very bad infections and you said that you were not that computer litterate so I will go slowly. If ay any time you do not understand what I mean, just ask for clarification.

Your internet connection is compromised by a "bug" that comes from a program that you have installed called New.Net

Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘backup registry’ in Windows 9x and ‘export’ in XP.

Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

Use this program only if you can not connect to the Internet after removing New(Dot)Net.

Follow these steps to remove NewDotNet:
A. Go to Start -> Control Panel.
B. Uninstall NewDotNet (New.Net) from Add/Remove Programs

If there is no uninstall program listed then do the following:
Go to http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html ; scroll down to Procedure 4 and follow the removal instructions.

If you can not connect to the Internet after removing New(Dot)Net, please run the LSP-Fix program downloaded earlier, and click on the "Finish" button.
***To start the LSPfix....Close all windows except LSPfix

Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

Reboot your machine.

Regards,

Trevuren

Thank you very much! I'm really sorry, but I'm gonna have to test your patience.

I'm trying to follow your steps in order, but I'm stuck on the first one already. I've clicked start, run, and then regedit....but I can't seem to find the "backup registry" under the file menu. Perhaps my lack of computer intelligence is coming into play, but all I see under the File menu is import, export, connect network registry, print, and exit.

I'm terribly sorry, but thank you so much.

My mistake, not yours. I was using older terminology.

Try this instead: Regedit->File->Export. When asked for a destination, specify Desktop.

okay, Trevuren, I feel really really bad right now.

Please don't be frustrated....

okay, so I click start, run, type in regedit, go to file menu, click export then deskstop....and then what do I save? because it asks me to save something.

I'm really sorry that I don't know what I'm doing and I keep pestering you.

::alright:: I think I understand now. I'm just really daft. K...so you simply just asked me to back up everything on the Desktop. Got it.

If you don't mind, could you summarize what LSPfix does? I read the text file, but I just want to make sure it won't permanently damage my computer.

No regedit-> A wndow called registry edit appears. Make sure you highlight the My Computer line .

Then go to File in the toolbar, click EXport from the list of posible actions.

A new window will appear called "Export Registry Fix".

In the lower left hand corner, make sure the ALL choice is chosen and where asked call it Trevuren.. On top, there is a where to save to box to fill-in. Look for desktop.

Once all this has been done, click on "SAVE"

Trevuren

Edited by Trev: As far as what "LSP-Fix is", it s program to heal your internet connection inthe event that the removal of New.Net damages it.

Hi silly_putty,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

I really appreciate this. I don't know how I can thank you.

I was a bit unclear on which files to delete because the extensions were different. I still deleted this things you told me to despite the different extensions. I hope that's what you wanted me to do. Here's my Hijack This log:

1. First to get rid of a very malicious 023 item (Running Service)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing))

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. Now we need to work from the Command Prompt

Go Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt

. A black box will appear with a flashing cursor. At the cursor, type cd.. then cd.. again and repeat the procedure until the writing preceeding the cursor says C:\>

. Now carefully type the following: sc delete SvcProc.

. Press ENTER.

.Close the Command Prompt box

3. Run HJT and place a checkmark beside the following entry:

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix checked and Exit program

4. REBOOT into Safe Mode as per previous instructions.

5. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

6. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

7. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
