Email Does Not Download

My email does not download. I use Thunderbird to access my email and my email is Verizon Yahoo via FIOS access to the Internet. I can send email and I can use the web to access my email, but starting last night when I access my email directly, it does not download. I get a message saying that it is loading, but it doesn't and eventually I get a message that it "timeed out."
