Hello!

Using a Dell Inspiron 1501 -- Windows XP

I got the Blue Scree of Death -- which said:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I have run the diagnostics test and gotten:

Smart Long Self Test Failed
MSG: IDE device failed
the self test failed the read portion of the test

And also:

Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

When I put the XP Reinstallation CD in it asks me or a recovery CD which did not come with the laptop.

Can this be fixed? Is there anyway to know exactly what is going on?

Thanks so much!

Hello Jenninboise:

Diagnostic result is pretty self explanatory, pointing towards aging/failing Hard-drive please backup all data as soon as you could

All hard drives will die. They're mechanical, with moving parts. Moving parts rub against each other and eventually wear themselves out.

That's why backups (copies of your data) are so important.

If you have data on that you 'gotta have', http://www.Ontrack.com. (Note that this can get expen$ive though).

New hard drives for that older model laptop:
