Hello md262,

Go to Startup Repair for information on how to use Startup Repair in Vista.

Follow the steps there. Come back and tell me how you got on. :)

I'm not having much luck these days as my cdrom/dvd drive seems to have died (it doesn't read the cd) so I'm unable to run Startup Repair. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi md262,

Couple of things to ask you before we go to other solutions:

1 What exactly is happening with your CD/dvd drive i.e. is it spinning and not reading the disk or is it not even powering up and opening?

2 Are you sure you have the right disk?

Hi,
1. The cdrom is not spinning. I even attempted to play a music cd but it won't spin either.
2. The Windows DVD was provided by Dell and is entitled "Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit". The instructions state that this "software is already installed on your computer. Only use this DVD to reinstall the operating on a Dell PC." Is this the incorrect disk? The only other disk Dell provided was for the drivers.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run and type in

devmgmt.msc

Hit OK

A Device Manager window should come up.

expand DVD/CD-ROM drives in the list that you are presented with. Come back and tell me what you see.

Yes that looks okay to me.

Now

Open Computer Management, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools (you may have change your control panel to a classic view - Windows 7 top right large icons - to see Administrative Tools), and then double-click Computer Management.

Post back a picture of what you see there.

Hi md262,

Please highlight Disk Management and let me see what is there. I should have asked you that in the first place :)

Thanks for those. I am not seeing what is causing this so I am going to consult with some other experts.

I will come back to but it might be a while. We are in different time zones. :)

Hello again md262,

Something to try:

Go to cd/dvd drive Fixit and use the Fix itt troubleshooter.

Don't try the other options mentioned at that page.

Come back tell me if that makes a difference to you CD drive.

Thank you. To confirm, the option you want me to use is: "Let me fix it myself" which includes deleting the upperfilters and lowerfilters, correct?
