I have a desktop PC running Win7 and my son has a laptop running Win7. Using the same internet connection, he can download at around 1.78 Mbs while I'm only able to get around 120Kbs.

He has an

Atheros AR8132PCIE Fast Ethernet Controller

and mine is

Intel® 82578DC Gigabit Ethernet Connection

How do I tell how fast an Ethernet Controller is? I can't understand what I read. My son told me his was faster than mine, so I stopped at Staples and got a new one, a

NetGear Gigabit Ethernet PCI Adapter GA311

My son says that is the same, speedwise as the one I already have in my machine ... someone please tell me how to figure out all this.

Using the same internet connection

Please explain what you mean here.

And how are you measuring this? Are you downloading from the same site.

What does Speedtest say for both of you?
