Do you have an ethernet cable that you could use to connect directly to the router ?

OK lets go back a step - in device manager is the network card showing as working ?

For the item with the question mark, right clcik and select uninstall
Then reboot and allow it to detect the hardware

uninstalled and rebooted. still shown as unknown device, neither windows nor I know what it is. lol

the motherboard on this system has two lan ports, and device manager shows both of them as working..as a matter of fact whichever port I plug the network cable into gets the proper ip address setup from the router.

Well it is not malware - so lets check some system elements out

Please download SINO by Artellos.

  • Save SINO to a place you can remember and run SINO.exe. (If you downloaded the ZIP version you will need to extract it first)
  • Then please check the following checkboxes:
    System Info
    Services
    Boot Check
    Tasklist
    Startup Items
    Event Log
    Ipconfig
    Ping
    Netstat
    Hosts file
    Shares
    Routing Table
  • Once checked, hit the Run Scan! button and wait for the program to finish the scan.
  • A notepad window will pop up. Please copy all of the content into your next reply.
Note: If you try to interact with the program once it’s started scanning it might appear to hang. The scan however will continue.

I cannot get it to run...I have selected all the afformentioned check boxes and hit Run Scan and it pops up a window saying you haven't made a selection.

nothing. if I tick it with everything selected, it unselects everything, tick it without anything selected and it doesn't do anything what so ever.

I will need to ask Artellos about that - just going to see if I can find a similar testing programme
