Hi There,

The space on my hard drive (Windows XP is my OS) is pretty much non-existent at this point (I have about 3% of space left). I have a strong feeling that I have unnecessary programs currently installed, but I have no idea what is junk and what is crucial.

I am especially frustrated because I have an external hard drive with tons of available space as well as 2 GB of memory, but my computer is running super slow, lol.

Download Autoruns from http://technet.micro...s/bb963902.aspx
1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.
Do this first please and we can then look at a couple more things to improve system performance.

Complete what phillpower2 needs, then we need to know some computer specs.

We need to avoid (if possible) installing any program to get the computer info.

What type of computer? Dell, HP, Compaq, home built?
What size is the main OS drive?
What size is the backup drive?

You will have to move some data (pictures, documents, movies, etc) to the other drive to free up space.

I notice you have various anti virus software installed, having more than one causes issues as
the programs fight for system resources + some programs are a lot more demanding than others.
I suggest you uninstall all but one of your AV programs 1st then download Avast free available
@ http://www.avast.com...ivirus-download this is a very good and very user friendly AV program
once you are secure remove the last of your earlier AV programs.
Once you have done this can you post a screenshot of your ADD/Remove Programs screen please, it
will look similar to the pic below;
Without knowing what applications on the list that you actually use it is hard to suggest what
you do not need, Acronis and Roxio entries are in abundance and the minimal size of the HDD with
the OS on it being used to back up your data is over burdening the drive, copy everything you wish
to keep over to the external HDD now before removing anything further.
The laptop HDD is possibly 40GB overall meaning that you need to have at least 5GB of available space
on it at all times.

EDIT: Can you also download and run TFC from http://www.geekstogo...ds&showfile=187 if your laptop does not reboot automatically when TFC has finished do it manually, emptying the recycle bin and defragging the HDD on a regular basis will also help.

I was able to free up some space on my own, I have about 6.5GB of space now, but, if possible, I would like to free up some more space.

Is it possible for you to tell me which programs are needed to run XP and Microsoft Office? Particularly the Microsoft.NET Framework programs...

I offered you a brief explanation of why running more than one AV program is bad and below is another take on it that I found elsewhere;

"Most people know they should only have one but do they know why?
Having more than one AV would catch more viruses – right?
No, WRONG! Antivirus programs clash with each other, a bit like two guys fighting over one chick.
AV programs work at a low level whereas other programs run at high level. It is ok to have multiple instances of, lets say, web browsers as they just connect to the net then close down completely when you are finished surfing and they operate on the higher level.
So what actually happens is when you have two programs working at low level is they trip over each other causing program crashes and system lockups.

Most antivirus programs operate in two modes:
Scan Mode: the program examines the memory and files on your hard disk for traces of malware. This involves examining the contents each file for traces that ‘look like’ viruses.
Monitor Mode: usually called or referred to as ‘real time monitoring’, the program runs constantly scanning files as they are downloaded to your machine, notifying you if the file you just received contains something that appears to be a virus.
It’s ok to scan with a different antivirus program than your normal resident scanner as all that happens is the program will scan, report it findings then it will close down. Online scanners are good for second opinions. But if you install a second AV program it will (or should) inform you that another antivirus program has been detected and to uninstall it, if you choose to ignore this warning it will then install its own ‘real time monitors’ and that is when the problems will start – lockups, poor performance and crashes."

Please seek the guidance of a Malware Tech for clarification on what AV software you need to keep your system safe.

Golden rule is never meddle with things you are unsure of, leave anything related to your OS or MS in general well alone, I learned the hard way some 20+ years ago that what to me was an annoying insignificant looking dll file on my desktop could actually crash my computer when I removed it

Unfortunately there is no screenshot attached, the best way forward here is for you to identify what is on the list that you actually use, there will be many items on the list that you do not consciously use but do and these cannot be removed.
