Disabling on board soundcard?

Does anyone know the proper way for me to disable an onboard soundcard, (an Intel P4 S478/800) before I attempt to install a soundblaster "Live 24" PCI card? ? ?

I actually did not disable the onboard card first, and I had installed the new soundblaster, only to have "that procedure" screw things up.

So now what?
