virus posting no. four on all data fields

when i start up ( and close down) my vaio, i have a high pitched whine and a very slow connection time. When eventually I am online the number four continually appears on any data field I try to enter data into.I assume it is a virus or spyware/malware.I run Norton 360 .5 Premier virus protection software on a windows xp operating system.
