Imac All Audio has an echo

Hi,

I'm using an Imac 10,1 running OS X 10.6.7

Today, out of the blue I have a problem with all audio, e.g. through itunes, safari, vlc whatever. The problem occurs whether i'm using external speakers or headphones.

All the sound has a massive amount of echo/delay. It's like a program is applying audio effects to anything I play.

Any help?
