DVD Drive works with CDs but not DVDs

Well, I can play music CDs but that's it. Reformatted and reinstalled Windows the other day in an attempt to fix it (was going to do it anyway) however this task proved difficult as of course Windows comes on a disc...

Seeing as I can't even boot from a disc then I'm guessing it's not a driver issue (I have reinstalled drivers to no avail). Could it be a hardware fault?

The disc will spin up and then spin down repeatedly but never getting any further. The drive is recognised in device manager and My Computer.

This is on my Acer Aspire 5536

Sounds like the dvd read side has failed. Only option is to replace the drive.
