Hi,

I've spent the last few days trying to remove an apparent virus. I have been getting google redirects, very occasional pop-ups, and my sound hasn't been working in youtube (but is for downloaded media).

System restore failed to solve the problem. I did scans with the latest versions of MBAM and then Avast; Avast detected a rootkit in volsnap.sys and the virus win32 alureon p. Avast has failed to remove the rootkit, even using boot-time scans.

So I researched users' similar problems and have tried solutions recommended to them, with no success:
* TDSSKiller will not run.
* Dr Web is unable to detect the rootkit.
* Combofix crashes my system, even after renaming it and disabling antivirus software.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Below are my logs from MBAM and OTL (please ignore the strange dates and times - those are unrelated and my doing).

Copy the text in the code box by highlighting and Ctrl + c

/md5start
volsnap.sys
/md5stop

then run OTL and Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste (ctrl +v) the text. Verify that you got it all and Then click the Run SCAN button at the top
Let the program run unhindered, OTL will reboot the PC when it is done. Save the log and copy and paste it to a reply.

Let the program run unhindered, OTL will reboot the PC when it is done. Save the log and copy and paste it to a reply.

This next one may crash the PC so submit your logs first.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

On completion of the scan (Note if the Fix button is enabled and tell me) click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

If the FIX button (not the FIXMBR button) was enabled go ahead and submit your reply then go back and run aswMBR again and press the FIX button. Post that log in a separate post.

I ran the custom fix with some interesting results. All of the hidden files on my computer which had been invisible became visible (I have 'show hidden files' enabled). I also had a crash with the message:
"c:\windows\system32\services.exe has unexpectedly shut down with status code 1073740972."

Unfortunately, I think I've lost the log files and running the fix again has not regenerated them. Should I do something else to regain them?

Am moving on to aswMBR.exe, now.

Save it to your desktop then run it.
Double click on TDSSKiller.exe
If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

See if it will run now.

Copy the text in the code box by highlighting and Ctrl + c

/md5start
services.exe
/md5stop

then run OTL and Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste (ctrl +v) the text. Verify that you got it all then select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

Rename the file "C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\MBR.dat" to "C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\eekimMBR.txt Attach the file to a reply.

Download

http://ad13.geekstogo.com/MBRCheck.exe

Save it and run it. It will produce a log MBRCheck(date).txt on your desktop. Copy and paste it into a reply.

What make and model PC is this?

Create a folder on your desktop. Label that folder avz4. Download avz4.exe from HERE and save it in the avz4 folder. ( A zipped file is available here)
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: Posted Image
  • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the "Advanced System Analysis with malware removal mode enabled" check box.
    Posted Image
  • Click on the “Execute selected scripts”.
  • Automatic scanning, healing and system check will be executed.
  • A logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be created and saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscure.zip.
  • It is necessary to reboot your machine, because AVZ might disturb some program operations (like antiviruses and firewall) during the system scan.
  • All applications will work properly after the system restart.

When restarted

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the “Advanced System Analysis" check box.
    Posted Image
  • Click on the "Execute selected scripts".
  • A system check will be automatically performed, and the created logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscheck.zip.

Attach both virusinfo_syscure.zip and virusinfo_syscheck.zip to your next post

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

This is a Dell Optiplex GX270. All of your instructions went well except for updating AVZ. For some reason, both the button to update and the option to do so under 'File' were grayed out. So I ran it without updating. The MBRCheck log and requested files are below.

I think we are going to need to try fixmbr with the recovery console. It appears you have just the regular xp mbr so it shouldn't cause any problems and it may kill the infection.

You might want to download Hiren's Boot CD
http://www.hirensboo...BootCD.14.0.zip
and create a bootable CD just in case something goes wrong. This has a lot of different MBR tools so is handy to have.
INstructions here:
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/burning/

Let's see if you can get into the Recovery Console. Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery -Settings, and change the Time to Display the List of Operating Systems from two to 10 seconds. OK

Now Reboot. When it gives you a choice between your regular XP and the Recovery Console, hit the down arrow to select the Recovery Console then Enter. You should get a black screen with a C:\> prompt. Type with an Enter after each line:

fixmbr

exit

Reboot into regular mode and run aswmbr again and post the log.

I made the boot CD and changed the Control Panel settings successfully. However, I do not seem to have Recovery Console or an XP CD. Is there another way I can fix the mbr?

Forgot we couldn't run Combofix which installs the Recovery Console.

Boot off Hirem's and select MBR (Master Boot Record) Tools then MBRFix. Type this:

MBRFix /drive 0 fixmbr /yes
