good deal, just to make sure nothing else is left hanging

start > run
netsh winsock reset catalog
enter.

That will clean up any remaining garbage settings

Okay, a black box opened up and said something, but it closed real quick. does that mean it's done doing what it's supposed to do?

yep, that is what it is supposed to do--it resets the tcpip regestry settings to the default....a problem like you had can sometimes leave behind trace problems. That made sure none remain.
