My husband picked up the "xp internet security 2012" virus. Following the steps I found here online, I f8'd into safe mode -- which didn't work. So I changed the boot.ini (in msconfig) to automatically boot into safe mode -- which worked -- except now the screen fades to black after about 30 seconds.

I think everything "underneath" is working fine -- except for the screen fading -- which makes it impossible to proceed with any removal fix -- or to reboot far enough to reset boot.ini

Screen also fades in F2 (settings) mode -- and in f8 (normal) boot.

Update:

I hooked up a temporary monitor and that worked fine -- so I could at least see what I was doing. Cleaned out the malware and re-attached the original monitor -- and it's all okay now.

Just in case this helps someone else with "xp intnernet security 2012" -- once I could see the screen, I got rid of it quite easily using "Super Anti Spyware" and then Eusing's registry cleaner. Both free and previously installed on the pc.
