Tried to update microsoft service pkg 3, had a couple of clitches with backup files, rebooted to started again and received this message "The endpoint format is invalid". Can not find the recovery disks that normally comes with laptop.
What can I do?

Boot to Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot as soon as you see the Manufacturers logo appear, earlier if that doesn't take.

Do a System Restore to before the failed SP3 install.

Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Pick a date before the SP3 install.

Download the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

Install from the downloaded file by double clicking on it. I've always had better success using it rather than via Windows Update.
