I am getting an "unmountable boot volume" error. Does this mean my hard drive crashed? I've tried the XP Recovery CD to no avail and am wondering if it will be easier to just buy another hard drive and try to use the old one as a slave.

Does the hard drive show up in BIOS Setup? If not then it's definitely defective. A new hard drive sounds like the way to go.
You say you tried the XP Recovery CD. What exactly did you do? What happened when you tried it?

As for using the old one as a slave, that's may not work at all or if it does it may have intermittent problems. No harm in trying it though.

Thanx for the reply. Where is the hard drive identifier in BIOS set up? When I try booting it from my Recovery CD I get the error message: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." STOP: 0XF780663C, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0x00000000, It then wants me to restart & try running CHKDSK/F, but I am unable to get to a DOS prompt.

When you boot the computer, you press F1, F2, F10 or Del (usually one of those) to enter Setup (BIOS Setup). From there how you see what hard drive you have differs for each brand of computer.

What is the make and model number of your computer. May be able to find the online Users Guide which should have that info in it.
