Dell Inspiron mouse pad no longer works

I called Dell. They dialed in and said that I had malware on my computer and wanted to sell me $250.00 worth of software.
My question is this, Can malware cause a mouse pad to no longer work? If so, what should I use to rid the computer of this malware?
