Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml


Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

do you see anything else that is concerning? just as an aside, i am running into a problem with my sygate personal firewall not working (the smc.exe problem that i am unfortunately not able to fix, at least via my feeble computer brain), and i was not sure whether the two are related...

Let's kill them.

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!


* Please download the Killbox. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

looks like the only one that is remaining is the avservice.exe, and it is at the bottom......is that it or can you find other ways of shedding my computer of extra pounds?

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

AVCore

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


Open HijackThis to the misc tools section and click the Delete an NT Sevice button.
Paste in �

SrvMain

and click OK.

Press 'back' and 'scan'.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Update Utility0825] C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\Update Utility0825.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot your computer and post back a fresh log using HijackThis.

i have to run out but wanted to tell you a bit about my problem with the search function (although i am sure it is not appropriate to talk about it here in the malware forum...but anyway)

i am running into a problem with not being able to use my Search function from the Start menu in Windows XP. as I try to run the Search function, the following error message occurs...

"A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup."

the familiar panel then loads up with the dog, but nothing else shows up on the screen. needless to say I can't do any searches

i recently upgraded to windows xp sp2, but obviously only have my xp disc (no sp2 disc) so i cant do the whole re-setup thing with the scannow function...

anyway, any ideas that you may have is greatly appreciated! i will try your other suggestions and let you know

unfortunately, when i tried to Run and type Services.msc i get this error message:

"MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\Services.msc.

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."

so I went to the system 32 folder, all i see are two files with services. one is an application (106kb) and the other is a MCC file (33kb), neither of which contains the msc extension....

i am guessing that i am in trouble now....

Let's see if we can get search back to work:
Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.
NOTE: You may need your Windows XP CD-ROM to finish installing Search Companion.

You could put your xp disk in the cdrom and go to start - run. Type in cmd At the prompt type exactly sfc /scannow

This will scan and fix corrupted system files. Then try services again.
