Unfortunately, I've been mad busy moving to another country, so I haven't had time to try it yet. Will get on it as soon as I'm not so dependent on the laptop (ie not living out of car)
Thanks for all the advice,

In the first paragraph of this link is a small utility called USB Evaluation Utility. Download it and run it and then click details. In details it may give you an indication as to whether the problem is software, hardware or driver....

I've used the utility in W2000....

It said that everything was fine on the driver end and that my computer supports USB. But clearly it's NOT working, i still don't know why.

i am also having the same problem and like tristanbrooker, everything that he says is also in my device manager. but I when uninstalling and lettting windows reinstall it, it says I have a power surge error and so I reset it from that pop up and everything goes back to normal. and it used to show more usb connected then I had until I installed my pci ones.

asus p5gdc mobo W/ intel p4 530j cpu Running/ xp sp2

and that usb evaluation program is crap. it doesnt even do a thorough check. the test finished in less then a second.

Ok - See you already did a lot of testing!!!

Gone through all this myself the last few days!

First of all my details:

Motherboard ->
Chaintech 9JBA
Intel Socket 478 - INTEL 845 Chipset
USB ->
USB1.1 onboard / 2Controllers! / 4 Slots :tazz:
OS ->
Clean Windows XPSP2 - all of the f*** windows updates ;D

So what I did ->

Did all the "windows driver" stuff like uninstall usb drivers reboot / install/unsinstall chipset drivers (availability ?? thought so ;)..)
Did enable/disable BIOS USB support ans so on
Did the Power saving windows crap .....
------------------------

So yesterday I was all fed up with windows AND with hardware!!!

Inserted Knoppix - bootet, and what a great day - everything worked absolutely fine!!!

So my suggestion -> Could someone try to boot to any other OS to confirm my experience - so that we know that we have the same problem - so we can get rid of it altogether??

I've got a dual boot system: Windows XP and Fedora Core 2. Your experience is the same as my own. Everything works fine in Linux. Its in Windows XP that the USB ports don't work. Hope it helps, I'd love to know how to sort this out! Thanks.

You can now upgrade from usb1.1 to 2.0 by downloading new drivers from the Microsoft website, so you don't need to add a usb card to get 2.0 capability.
