virus took my info, now my pc or hard drive?

so i had a virus attack that i could not get out, so i gave up and tried to wipe the drive and start anew, used active kill to clean the drive. now if i attempt to load windows(XP)i get the blue screen and the cycle starts over, what can i do to correct this and also how does a virus do this?
