We got it! Norton backup have 105 GB and counting... Norton 360 is our problem. Let's try to remove backups from Norton. I would suggest you to remove all but two most recent Backup Set.

To delete a Backup Set
1. In the Norton 360 main window, move the pointer over Backup, and then click Manage Backup Sets.
2. On the Summary tab, in the Backup Set Name drop-down list, select the Backup Set that you want to delete.
3. Under Things you can do, click Delete this backup set.
4. In the confirmation dialog box, click Yes.

maliprog...thank you for your help through this, I'm sorry to say that I'm having a problem with your last instructions.

Norton won't let me delete anything. I go to Manage Backup Sets, on the Summary tab, I see the "Backup Set Name drop down list", when I click on the drop down arrow it only gives me one choice, "✓Default Set". When I click on Delete this backup set...a box appears and says this:

This backup set cannot be deleted as it is your only Backup Set and you must have at least one

Oh boy.

I found a new window...instead of the "Summary" tab, clicking on the "Where(C:)" tab...at the bottom left there is a "Delete backup files" line to click on. That brings up a new window. On the left side there are "Category" choices to click on, Pictures, Music, Documents etc. when you choose one, the box on the right of it lists countless items to check and delete. Can I use this to manually delete everything? What will it mean if I manually delete everything? I've noticed some of the items listed are not even on the computer anymore.

I don't use Norton so I can't navigate you from first hand but... I think it's OK to remove all you don't need from backup. There should be a lot of files so you need to be patient.

You also may want to disable automatic backups until we solve this. To disable it please read This article.

Please write update here for me so I can track what is going on :)

I don't know what a Back up file is. Can I hurt anything by deleting the wrong thing?
I'll begin now though, deleting the things I see that are obvious.

Delete whatever you want from Norton beckup. Norton have that backup folder where it copy files from your system to save them. If you lose your original file you can use this Norton beckup to restore it. That is the whole idea. If you don't need some files then it can't hurt to remove them and free some disk space.

It's taking 6 - 7 seconds to delete EACH item, doing it manually. The "photo" category alone has 11,600 items in it. Norton has backed up and saved everything that's ever been on this computer.

I'm going to go to the N360_BU Folder (My Computer, C:) and delete the sub folders inside it. There are 18 or so, I've deleted 3 of them and it's already cleared up 27 gigs of my disc.

I think it's ok to do that from what you've told me back up files are, but I'll wait to hear from you before I delete the rest of them.

Hi bruceRMC,

That is great news. Sometimes Norton protect that folder but if you can access it like that that is fine. Remove everything you don't need.

I'm glad we fix this. Do you have any other malware related problems?

Good work! Your logs and system are clean now. I'm glad we fix up your computer. We need to clean up your PC from programs we used.

Step 1

Please start OTL one more time and click CleanUp button. OTL will restart your system at the end. Remove all other application we used to clean your PC.

General recommendations

Here are some recommendations you should follow to minimize infection risk in the future:

1. Enable Windows Update
  • Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
  • Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them option.
  • Click OK button

2. Delete Temp files

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

3. Make Backups of Important Files

Please read this article Home Computer Data Backup.

4. Regularly update your software

To eliminate design flaws and security vulnerabilities, all software needs to be updated to the latest version or the vendor’s patch installed.

You should download Update Checker from here. The program will automaticly check for newer version of software installed on your system.
