I have screwed up my desktop - it is now trying to load from an external disk instead of the C: disk
my shortcuts are not showing and i cant create a folder - this only works if I connect the external drive
i understand there is a registry file that tells windows which desktop to load - does anyone know precisely which file this is and how to modify it

Microsoft has a Fix-It solution that fixes most of the shell folder paths (both per-user and per-machine shell folders) automatically. You can download the fix from KB886549

hope this helps
