Hey,
I recently downloaded msn plus and now i have a search toolbar in my ie and at the bottom of my screen another toolbar that i think is called search now! I've searched for this but it found nothing. I don't know how to get rid of the toolbars. I've run all of the virus scanners and found some viruses yet the toolbars still remain. Here is my Hijackthis log. Thanks in advance.

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, REBOOT your computer.

Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I've opened add/remove and clicked messenger plus! it's come up with
uninstall the sposer program only
or uninstall messenger plus! and the sponsor program!
Which one do i select?

First of all, never say your sorry if you are asking for clarification. This stuff can be tricky enough for us with training, for you people it can be a nightmare.

Answer: BOTH

After we have finished cleaning you up, you can re-install the program but remember to decline the ads part.

Okay i just deleted both and restarted my computer. Although while deleting it came up with the message "The installation package has been corrupted! You're getting this error because some files were deleted manually or by an automatic advertisment removal software, thus preventing the real uninstallation program to do its job. Messenger plus will now try to repair some of the damage in order to uninstall the sponser properly. If this doesn't work try to reinstall Messenger Plus! with the sponser and launch this uninstaller again...." I think this is because I ran adaware and some other programs after downloading msn plus.

I forgot to add. All of the toolbars are still there, and there has also been sites added to my favourties folder.

They are correct and so are you. Meaning you probably did corrupt some files with your attempts to uninstall it.

Now follow their directions, re-install Messenger Plus 3 and accept the ads.

Then UNINSTALL it again.

It should work perfectly.

There is other stuff probably going in your system but we will get to them later

You are still showing signs of LOP

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.


Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and DELETE it (if it is stil present):

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\8TWBCXG1\CWShredder214[1].exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.


3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
