Sporadic 404 Error

I am looking at a laptop for a friend and sometimes have a problem connecting to internet on it. The problem is that some sites connect ok but others return a 404 error? I can't understand this as I thought it would be all or nothing, some sites unaccesable are Google, Twitter etc. Sites that I know werent down at time?

A 404 error is a "page not found". This is a server error, not a computer error.
Are you sure you mean a 404 error and not a 403 or 500 error?

I have just checked it again and all pages are saying 404 error?
