.NET installation error

Hi,

My grandma has an old hp a640n computer with windows xp sp3 on it. I was doing some general checks on it and noticed the update shield had the update for >NET framework 3.5 SP1 so I tried to update it. It failed so I downloaded the short version and tried it and it gave repeated errors concerning .Net framework 2.0a error 1603. At this point I went into add/remove programs to see what was on the machine:

.NET framework 1.1
.NET framework 2.0
.NET framework 4 Client Profile
.NET framework 4 Extended

I then tried a repair install of 2.0. It said it was successful so I retried the 3.5 sp1 install and received the same errors.

What should I do to correct her .NET Framework??

Hello again.
I would do the following

1. Uninstall Net Framework 4 Extended.
.2 Uninstall Net Framework 4 Client Profile
On a computer of that age I doubt if you are running any programs or using any web services that will not run with Net Framework 3.5 and SP1.

Then download and install this

Note please that you should have any critical updates installed first. - see the notes on that download page.

AND whilst downloading and installing that - Disable your anti-virus please.
DO NOT FORGET to renable.

I uinstalled the .NET Framework 4's and disabled avast! on grandma's machine. Then I tried the 3.5 SP1 setup, I downloaded it, it started, and downloaded some more than it tried again to install and failed. So I tried to repair 2.0 and it said it was successful but when I tried to install 3.5 SP1 again the same thing.

1. Please go here and if you are offered the automated fix please run it.

That is the FIX it for me .


2. Go back to Control Panel Add/Remove programs.
Please check carefully what editions of Net Framework are shown as installed.
Please Make a note of what they are.
The uninstall starting with the most recent.
For example if you have Net framework 3.5 with SP1 uninstall that before you uninstall Net Framework 3 with SP2

If that completes successfully, and reboot the computer, then depending on what you have uninstalled and NOT using Windows updates
then NOW download and install what you have removed.
To make it easy for you
Net Framework 1.

Net Framework 1.l

and then you do not need to install 2 or its service packs, 3 or its service pack, or 3.5 as the one below will install 3.5 SP1 and all others before it from 1.1.

PLEASE READ carefully the instructions for each download making sure of course that English is selected.


THEN if that works go Windows update, after rebooting and obtain any updates.

Especially ensuring you have this one, whcih you will see mentioned on the Net Framework 3.5 SP1 download

Thank you for the help.

I had to leave grandma's to do some other things so I will try this on her computer on Tuesday or Thursday. That is when I have some tutoring at her house with some students in Stats.

Just a note to say thank you for the help!

I did the steps and a new error appeared that I googled and found the clean up tool. I used just the 2.0 selection on theclean up tool and it worked!! :yes: :) :)
