Hi, I've been trying to resolve a problem with my Windows 7 system. I operates very slow. Booting takes about 4-5 hours to complete (before everything is finally loaded). I've posted this on the OS Forum, and they've been trying to isolate the problem (you can follow the thread of what's been done here: http://www.geekstogo...54#entry2084454 ). At this point, I'm not sure if I have a malware problem or a drive problem. The guys on the OS Forum have been a great help, but I've got some time this weekend to try and make some progress with this so I'm posting an OTL log here to see if you see anything that looks suspicious.

The symptoms at this point are just that everything runs in slow motion. Applications take minutes to load, booting takes hours, clicking on the START button may take 30 seconds to 2 minutes to respond. The OS guys had me defrag my drive and that took 25hours :)

Sorry ignore this second message I accidentally posted a reply to this forum instead of the Windows 7 OS Forum. I wasn't trying to bump my previous post (again I apologize).

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator). Click once or twice on the CPU column header to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top. File, Save As, Save. Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System. (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Attach the file to your next post.

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs. Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application. Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc /scannow

(SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files. If it asks for a CD and you don't have one or it doesn't like your CD just tell it to SKIP.)

sigverif

Press Start in the new window. This will check your drivers. If you just get a few when it finishes tell me what they are. If you get a lot just look for those with newish dates (since about the time the problem started.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

OK, here are the results:

PROCEXP.TXT
Attached File  Procexp.txt   5.25KB   149 downloads

SPECCY Results:
Attached File  speccy.txt   96.11KB   134 downloads

Chkdsk Log looked OK. Here it is:
Attached File  chkdsk_log.txt   5.63KB   141 downloads

sfc came back with: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

sigverif did find anything recent (latest entry was September), and only found 3 unsigned files:
MV91cons.sys - which I think is associated with the MARVELL RAID driver on my Gigabyte MoBo
the other two are ndasbus.sys and ndasscsi.sys which I'm almost certain are network storage drives for the harddrives I have LAN connected in mediaplayers.

If you want the log for this I can attach it.

VEW System log:
Attached File  VEW.txt   20.71KB   133 downloads

VEW Application log (I ran this for the dates 01Oct2011 to date, because the 20 event log didn't go back to before the problem started):
Attached File  VEW_Application.txt   304.31KB   768 downloads

Temps are good and there doesn't seem to be anything eating up the cpu %.

Speccy doesn't think much of your hard drive:

MARVELL Raid VD 0 ATA Device
Manufacturer FUJITSU
Heads 16
Cylinders 16383
SATA type SATA-II 3.0Gb/s
Device type Fixed
ATA Standard ATA/ATAPI-7
LBA Size 48-bit LBA
Power On Time UNKNOWN
Features NCQ
Transfer Mode Unknown
Interface SATA
Capacity 977GB
Real size 1,000,137,752,576 bytes
RAID Type None
S.M.A.R.T
Status Bad <==

Normally that means failure is coming soon and the drive should be backed up and replaced.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (continue), then Services and Applications then Services. Find Windows Search and right click on it and select Properties. Change the Startup type to Disabled and Apply. Stop the service.

Have you been having a lot of power outages or does it take so long to shut down that you have to pull the plug?

Log: 'System' Date/Time: 19/11/2011 4:30:33 AM
Type: Critical Category: 63
Event: 41 Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Your event logs are full of network errors so let's run a couple of quick network tests.

Start, (All) Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run As Admin. Type:

ping -n 50 8.8.8.8

(This will ping google's DNS 50 times. When it finishes it should say:
Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 25ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 26ms

Did it lose any? What was the average roundtrip?)

netstat -se > \junk.txt
netstat -rn >> \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

(Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.)

I don't see any signs of malware but it would be good to run a few scans if you have the time. Normally each only takes 10 minutes or so but since yours is so slow they may take several hours: You might try running them in Safe Mode with Networking. Could be they will run faster.

ComboFix

:!: It must be saved to your desktop, do not run it from your browser:!:

:!: Disable your Antivirus software when downloading or running Combofix. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well. See: http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html

Download and Save this file -- to your Desktop -- from either of these two sources:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Rightclick on ComboFix and select Run As Administrator to start the program.

* :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.

* A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Download TDSSKiller:
http://support.kaspe.../tdsskiller.exe
Save it to your desktop then right click and Run as Administrator

If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
Right click aswMBR.exe and Run as Administrator

change the a-v scan to None.
uncheck trace disk IO calls
Click the "Scan" button to start scan
On completion of the scan (Note if the Fix button is enabled (not the FixMBR button) and tell me) click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Another possibility especially if it seems to run faster in Safe Mode:

Start Run, msconfig, OK
Go to Services tab and click on the box to hide Microsoft Services then uncheck
everything that remains. Go to Startup tab and uncheck everything. OK and
reboot. If it doesn't run faster then go back into msconfig and recheck the
things you turned off. If it helps then go back and turn on a few items each
time until you find the culprit.

I got some of this done this morning, so I'll post it now before going to work:

1) My drive. We've been focusing on the drive as a possible problem over on the OS forum, but it really hasn't had a lot of errors. Maybe its the RAID drivers, reviews on this motherboard and not good for the MARVELL RAID interface. Also my C Drive is made up of two Western Digital (WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 3.5 Inch, 7200, 64 MB1 TB, 64 MB) drives which should be 6GB/s and I thought were on a SATA-III port? Anyhow, I did purchase a new Seagate 1TB 6GB/s drive to swap with ... just in case, so replacement IS AN OPTION.

2)Disabled Windows Search startup

3)This problem started with a prolonged power outage, I had thought I had shut down before power was lost, but maybe I didn't. Also, I power everything through a UPS. Since the problem began, I have had to force a power down many times (holding power button down for 6 seconds). Before this however, it would always shut down on its own (albeit, sometimes a little slowly - but not more than a couple of minutes).

4) Network results were only obtained after disabling COMODO. COMODO had gotten itself into SAFE MODE and was blocking PING until I allowed it. I've disabled Firewall for the duration of our testing. RESULTS: min 93ms, max 208ms, ave 115ms, 0% lost

5) netstat results:
Attached File  NETSTAT results.txt   7.08KB   109 downloads

I'll work on the malware stuff tonight. Have a good day

Read through your other post. I wonder if the long power outage allowed the 3v battery to run down that controls the BIOS settings? Normally this should be good for several years so it's probably not the case but next time you are booting up go into the BIOS Setup and poke around. See if there is an option to set it to the default or if there is an option that seems wrong.

.... continued...

Here's the ComboFix log. (Note I accidentally ran this with Microsoft Security Essentials running)
Attached File  combofix_log.txt   18.64KB   91 downloads

Here's TDSSKiller Log:
Attached File  TDSSKiller.2.6.20.0_22.11.2011_17.03.21_log.txt   80.89KB   106 downloads

Here's aswMBR log (the FIX button did NOT come up Enabled):
Attached File  aswMBR.txt   1.47KB   91 downloads

I didn't go forward with msconfig, as I had done this before with no apparent results (over on the OS Forum). However, somewhere during this process (and maybe it's just coincidental), my system seem fine. I rebooted and everything came up within about 3 minutes (basically normal for me). I don't know if this is permanent or if maybe my drive being fluky, and just behaving for once.

Perhaps I should replace a drive (one or both), or the more I read about the RAID interface and drive on my motherboard, I'm wondering if it might be better to avoid the RAID interface entirely and just put in a single drive on another port. If I do that do you know of anyway to transfer my existing system image over to a nonRAID drive without having to reinstall everything?

Hmmm... you know you might be right about the onboard battery (although my system was assembled in Jan 2011, so I wouldn't normally expect the battery to be dead already). I did poke around the BIOS and got some warning messages in the overclocking area about voltage setting perhaps being wrong. I didn't know if that was just a generic warning or actually prompted by the system having sensed a problem. Is there anyone here that can help with BIOS settings?

I can't really answer your question about Raid drives. No experience with them at all. Ask over in the OS group.

If you can give me the make and model of the PC or the motherboard and if I can find something on the maker's website about the BIOS options then I will see what I can do. I'm no expert on BIOS setup tho. Malware is more my thing so again another question which might be better asked in the OD forum.

Just the cleanup routine:

You can uninstall or delete any tools we had you download and their logs.
To uninstall combofix, copy the next line:

"%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix.exe" /Uninstall

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run As Administrator.
then right click, Paste, then hit Enter.

OTL has a cleanup tab if you go there it will remove itself and its logs.

To hide hidden files again (OTL may do it for you):

Vista or Win7

# Open the Control Panel menu and click Folder Options.
# After the new window appears select the View tab.
# Remove the check in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
# Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Do not Show hidden files and folders.
# Check the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
# Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.

Also make sure you have the latest versions of any adobe.com products you use like Shockwave, Flash or Acrobat.

Whether you use adobe reader, acrobat or fox-it to read pdf files you need to disable Javascript in the program. There is an exploit out there now that can use it to get on your PC. For Adobe Reader: Start, All Programs, Adobe Reader, Edit, Preferences, Click on Javascript in the left column and uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript. OK Close program. It's the same for Foxit reader except you uncheck Enable Javascript Actions.

To help keep your programs up-to-date you should download and run the UpdateChecker:
http://www.filehippo.../updatechecker/
(You don't need to download Betas and if there is a program you don't use you can just uninstall it rather than update it. Exception is MSN messenger which appears to be part of Windows.)
If you get a blocked program notice after installing updatechecker then change it to not run at start then manually run it once a week.

If you use Firefox then get the AdBlock Plus Add-on. WOT (Web of Trust) is another you might want to try.
The equivalent to AdBlock Plus for IE is called Simple Adblock and you should install it too: http://simple-adblock.com/
The free version only blocks 200 ads a day so another reason to use Firefox or Chrome.

If Firefox is slow loading make sure it only has the current Java add-on. Then download and run Speedy Fox.
http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox . You can run it any time that Firefox seems slow.

Be warned: If you use Limewire, utorrent or any of the other P2P programs you will almost certain be coming back to the Malware Removal forum. If you must use P2P then submit any files you get to http://virustotal.com before you open them.

If you have a router, log on to it today and change the default password! If using a Wireless router you really should be using encryption on the link. Use the strongest (newest) encryption method that your router and PC wireless adapter support especially if you own a business. See http://www.king5.com...-120637284.html and http://www.seattlepi...ted-1344185.php for why encryption is important. If you don't know how, visit the router maker's website. They all have detailed step by step instructions or a wizard you can download.
