Its an HP Pavilion xt963 running Windows XP. It was running really slow at first, and we leave it on. It's connected to a small t.v. screen for a monitor. When we switched over to it one day, the monitor would not come on. We had to reboot it several times to get it on, but then the monitor would keep shutting off by itself. Couple days later we booted it up and got the message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. So I put the CD in, but when I went to change the order in BIOS, it asked for a password, which I didn't have. So then I read somewhere online about removing the memory sticks one by one, which when I did the first one, it beeped a lot on boot up but the monitor would not start up. When I unplugged the monitor from the tower, it came on, but as soon as I plug it back in, the monitor goes into sleep mode. The keyboard doesn't seem to work either. Any suggestions?

Hi Keyz and :welcome:

So I put the CD in, but when I went to change the order in BIOS, it asked for a password, which I didn't have.

GTG will not help work around passwords but if you have never set one leave it blank.
Please follow this http://www.geekstogo...air-windows-xp/ guide carefully

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS (not all computers are the same) http://www.hiren.inf...bios-boot-cdrom
Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the BIOS/CMOS
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CD drive
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

The computer may be showing signs of its age so I suggest that if you have any important data on the hard drive that as soon as you are able you back it up, is your keyboard the USB or wired type?
