Hello all,

My primary drive is a Western Digital 100GB. I just installed a Western digital 200GB slave drive. The drive is recognized by the system and everything seems to be in order .. jumper settings, XP configuration, write/read to/from the drive, etc.

The problem I'm having is that (certain) AVI files will not play from the slave drive. Some play perfectly .. but others will not play at all. Of the files that won't play, some of them say 'missing B-frame', the rest say nothing. Other video formats such as MPG, WMV, etc., play without problem. The slave drive works perfectly in all other aspects.

Now here's the thing that has me baffled. The 'problem' AVI files will play from the primary drive, but not the slave drive. I can play an AVI located on the primary .. move it to the slave drive .. THEN it won't play. But when I move the same file BACK to the primary drive .. it once again works flawlessly.

Any help or insight is much appreciated!

Just a guess, but there may be files in the system or some other folder that are being used and the AVI files on the other drive giving you problems may not be able to reference these files since the path to these files is incorrect.

Hopefully, someone with more knowlege about this will get to you soon so you don't have to "bump" your post.

are you certain they are avi files? i ask this because I though 'missing B-frame' was a streaming video file error, and avi is not a streaming video format.

No, I'm not positive they're AVI files .. their extention is .AVI so that's what I wrote here. I opened 2 files in GSpot and the results are below.

GSpot v2.21 says this about a file that won't even start on the slave drive:

Splitter: AVI Splitter

Video Decoder: XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder
Video Renderer: Video Renderer

Audio Decoder: MPEG Layer-3 Decoder
Audio Renderer: Default DirectSound Device

It also says: This is a valid AVI file


GSpot says this about a file that starts to play, but gives the b-frame error:

I suppose files needed to play them could be in use, or have an invalid path since they're on the primary drive. But I'm starting the player from the primary drive .. then pointing it to the secondary drive for the source file, so I'm not sure if that's the problem.

What mode is the drive in?
(ultra dma, pio)

It is a slave? Why not a master on the second controller?

The drive has Ultra DMA Support: 0,1,2,3,4,5 and indicates that Ultra DMA is active at level 5.

Regarding master/slave drive .. I'm probably using the wrong terms. Both drives are on the Primary IDE Channel -and- both drives have jumpers set to cable select (CS). However, in troubleshooting this problem, I have tried the jumpers in several configurations: master/slave, cs/slave, cs/cs but the playback problem remains.

I suppose the reason that some files will play and others won't is due to the type of encoding used. After reading other info I've found, I'm now beginning to wonder if I need to set something differently in the BIOS.
