[Gaetek]

According to Symantec it is a trojan horse. File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys
i have tried everything i can think of to get rid of it, but it keeps coming back. any help would be very nice. Thank you all in advance.

I dont even use IE anymore, the only thing i used it for since i reformatted last was to dl Firefox.

It's a nasty bug that you have so I will post the fix for you later this morning.

In the meantime, please go to Start > Control Panel

Double-click the "Java Plugin" icon (coffee cup). The Java Control Panel will open up, please locate the "Update" button in that panel and click it to update your Java.

i dont think i should update my java, because i need java 1.4 for one of my programming classes, i dont know if that will affect it or not, but i do need atleast compile in 1.4

It will update to 1.5...you can't use 1.5 Java - it has to be 1.4? Ok, that's fine. We'll remove the Java updater from Startup as well just incase it decides to update on it's own to 1.5

Set your system to SHOW HIDDEN FILES

Then using Windows Explorer, please locate this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Right-click on it and go to "Rename". Rename it to rdriv.bak

Open Notepad, and copy everything inside the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as rdriv.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"

Locate rdriv.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

After the "merged successfully" prompt, please do the following:

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

After your computer reboots, Run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Make sure rdriv.bak is GONE! Let me know!

Now, we need to make sure your XP firewall is working properly.

Go to Start > Run - type in:

firewall.cpl

Make sure it says "On" and that you can turn it on and off and that nothing is greyed out. Also, make sure you Anti-virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

I apologize, I just remembered firewall.cpl is for systems with Service Pack 2.

Ok, now, since your system is clean, I highly recommend downloading XP Service Pack 2 to seal up the vulnerabilities that allowed this infection.

http://www.microsoft.com click on "Windows Update" then click "Express Install" to install all security updates.

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
