I have a HP 6910P and I was wondering if I can upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB?
The motherboard is an Intel PM965, the CPU is an Intel Core Duo T7500.
All help would be appreciated.

According to the specs, 4Gb is the maximum. Note too, if you wanted to use 8Gb, you would need to buy and install a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit OS requires 64-bit drivers for all the hardware devices.

Using the manual input for the Crucial memory wizard, I am still showing 4Gb as the maximum. Therefore, I am sticking with my original statement and say that you are already at your maximum.

I have registered just to let you know that I have seen this: http://geekswithblog...g-with-8gb.aspx ; and decided to buy this memory from amazon (VS4GSDS800D2) and my hp6910p has recognized the 8gb with no problem. Now is 8gb ram and running with t9300 cpu, the performance of this old laptop is very impressive and almost as fast as the first gen i3. Also you must now that there is no heat issues nor battery extra drain; only faster by maybe three times compared to original configuration. Hope this helps.

I was in the market for this exact thing myself and decided to see what I could find. I too read that HP stated the max memory for this laptop was 4GB but also read that people had used the Crucial memory to get the desired 8GB. However, as of this writing, the Crucial memory is still going for close to $200 for an 8GB kit (2 x 4GB). So I tried my luck on Ebay. I won an auction for some Hynix 8GB (2x 4GB)PC2-6400 DDR2-800MHz SODIMM Laptop Memory non-ECC RAM and I'm happy to say they work just perfectly! I paid $102.50 +$2.99 for shipping. The memory upgrade makes the system run great. HOWEVER, the BEST thing you can do for this laptop is to install an SSD and get off XP! I bought a VERTEX 4 128GB SSD and upgraded to Win7 64-bit and man does this thing FLY now!!! And to top things off, I purchased a multi-bay HD carriage to place a 320GB SATA II drive in for data storage, only using the SSD for the OS and applications. I hardly ever use the CD/DVD drive anyway so this was an easy call. And since it's interchangeable, I have it in the laptop bag for that "just in case" moment. These upgrades EASILY will allow another 3+ years of use out of this laptop. It runs 1000% faster than the day I took it out of the box. I clocked the time it took from when I pressed the power button until the desktop had fully loaded and the hourglass went away, both pre-upgrade and after. The results, Windows XP SP3, 3.5 minutes!! Win7 64-bit with the SSD and 8GB mem, 17 seconds!!!! See the screenshots of the memtest with MemTest86+ and the info page from Win7 showing the 8GB registering.

Hi,

Just registered to share the same experience from Switzerland:

- 8Gb will indeed work, but 6Gb makes the biggest difference.
- SSD is improving a lot end user experience.
- The Momentus XT 750Gb with 8Gb of SSD is a more than a very good alternative to a pure SSD and shows very similar performance on day to day tasks (it uses its 8Gb SSD to store most often accessed files by the OS and programs).
- Go for the CPU with a Penryn architecture, it shows significant improvements. The best one is the entry level T8300 @2.4Ghz (boost IDA @2.6Ghz) since its performance is very close to a T9500 (CPU mark of 2007 instead of 2069 for the later, and Windows perf of 6.1 vs 6.2) and it is much less expensive (you can get some for 30$).
- Hard drive in the bay is good idea but performance is limited (even a SSD in it does not reach the perf of a basic HD in the main bay). It is a very good alternative to an external USB drive since though, as it is twice as fast (Max transfer rate 65Mb/s vs 30Mb/s for the USB drive with the same HD).

I did the measures with HD Tune, Windows performance Information and Performance test 8.0. If you want print-screens, let me know and I'll figure out how to attach them here.

Just to add to this thread, here are some examples of the potential effects of updating this old little PC. I only show here the results with Windows Performance Information for simplicity.

Stock setup (processor was the T7300 and HD was a 7200tr/min):



With the SSD OCZ Vertex plus 240Gb and T9300 processor and 8Gb of memory:



With the T9500 processor (little improvement over the T9300) and a Momentus XT 750Gb (hybrid HD with 8Gb of SSD for read accesses):



With the X9000 (boosted to 3.2Ghz using ThrottleStop) and a Samsung SSD 810 256Gb:


As you can see, there's no progress on the graphic side, it's the only place where we can't upgrade this PC (unless you use an external solution like Vidock). Still it shows a major improvement of performance making use of the PC quite up to date. On the downside, it could be expensive reaching this level unless you give yourself necessary time to wait for the best offers (as an example I got the X9000 for as little as 70$).
