Hello, to everyone reading this thread. Happy new year's eve.
I have a toshiba portege m400-s933 worked flawlessly until earlier this year. Hard drive clicked and grinded. Before this it started random black screen, but fan and power lights remained on. I would have to reboot and then it would work fine, running on ac adapter alone (dead batt).
Also, I played sims 2 and 5 expansion/stuff packs insanely. Wondering if that may have broken my laptop.

Ok, now I use ubuntu 10.10 (for school) booting from disc and screen sometimes still goes black. What is causing this, major or minor. Also, does this when moved or touching keyboard.

Also, is this worth buying hd, battery. I would like to know if I can use 500gb hd. I can I somehow extract windows xp from hard drive using hd enclosure. As I don't have a copy of os.

System specs:

Toshiba portege m400-s933
(dead) 80gb hd
512 mb ram
intel core duo
Windows xp sp2 (upgraded to sp3 before crash)

I'm a student so, money is very tight. I cannot afford a new laptop.

All/any advice/help/experience will be greatly and sincerely appreciated.

Please remove your present drive and check the dimensions before any purchase, you may also need to update the BIOS to accept the larger storage capacity, I will do some research and post back.

The MB to screen video ribbon/cable may be loose, try connecting the laptop to an external screen to see if it still does it - if not you know it is a bad screen connection.

If the drive is dead then no - if not completely dead try acronis (free trial) http://download.cnet...4-10168093.html

EDIT:
Specs here show the laptop is good for up to 750GB at least; http://www.comptick....-m400-s933.html
