Hello,

I do not know how but I cannot change the background on my desktop. I have discovered through some research that my desktop tab is missing and that might be the problem. When I try to customize my desktop there is no desktop tab and I think that might finally solve my problem. I have already tried...

Checking the Turn on classis Shell
Ran the registry file found on Kellys Korner "restorealldisplaytabs.reg"
checked my group policy settings to make sure they said "not configured"
ran a malware program and an anti virus program (panda, malwarebytes, avast) that are both saying my system is clear
checked my registry to make sure that there were no errors under HKEY" current user and local machine

FYI, here is my Hijackthis report:

Hello there,

To restore the Desktop tab:

Open Group Policy Editor by typing "gpedit.msc" in the Open: line of Run on the Start Menu.

Navigate to User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Explorer
In the right pane, double click on Turn On Classic Shell
Set the radio button to Not Configured then click OK

Hope This Helps.

How many anti-virus programs are you running? I counted three. You should only be running one.

Is the tab missing if you boot to Safe Mode and login as Administrator? If not then boot normally and try creating a new User Account. Is the tab missing there? If not then there is some kind of corruption in your current account.

The easiest fix would then be to keep the new account (pick a name you can live with when you create it) and copy everything from the old account to the new account. You would have to do this from Administration in Safe Mode.

Boot normally, ligin with the new account. If all is still okay, delete the old account.

Follow these directions posted in GeeksToGo.com

  • Boot to Safe Mode, login as Administrator
  • Show all files by opening My Computer, Tools menu, View tab, check Show Hidden Files/Folders then uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files [Recommended]. Click Apply then OK.
  • Create a new Administrator level account via Control Panel / User Accounts.. Pick a good name as you will be keeping it.
  • Reboot the computer.
  • Login with the new account so the folder structure under Documents and Settings gets created, then log off.
  • Boot to Safe Mode, login as Administrator
  • Browse to c:\documents and settings\OldUserAccount
  • Select everything in that folder, including sub folders, except the three files called ntuser.dat, ntuser.dat.log, and ntuser.ini.
  • Copy all those files into c:\documents and settings\NewUserAccount. Reply Yes or Yes to all when duplicate folders or files are found.
  • Reboot the computer and login with your New user account.
Once you confirm all is well, you can delete the old profile.
