The DVD is not always detected during boot up.
Have to reboot to find it.
When a DVD is inserted in the internal DVD R/W, the PC freezes.
Is the problem with the DVD player or XP?
Where do I start looking to solve the problem?

1`. Please post the make and full model of the compyuter if branded

Most optical drives do not require a driver installation to function. The driver is found automatically

2. What make is the drive if you know.
When you boot and it not shown, presuming you mean in My Computer please do not reboot but go to device manager

3. Go start, right click my computer click properties and on the window that opens click the hardware tab, then click the device manager and button and on the entry for the drive is there any warning shown.

Expand the entry for DVD/CD drives and then Open the entry applicable to your drive by double clicking on it

What is shown please - The device is working correctly or a warning. and what is listed for the device please ie DVD etc IDE or SATA
Now on that window click the driver tab please and then click driver details button what is shown there please.
