that's weird I was just reading about someone with the same problem and it was there Nortons that was causing it.
I was just about to try uninstallin McAfee when your post came through.

I added Microsoft security essentails to it should I uninstall that and install avast instead. Will let you know what happens.

ok, ran the mcafee unistall rebooted no difference.

What is the actuall command for running sc query and where will i find the txt document.

Should i run it with ip as automatic assign or connected with static ip.

thought we had it there.

Can we go back to connecting with an Ethernet cable? It sounds like DHCP might have worked with the cable even before removing McAfee. Like to see the following from an elevated command prompt with the cable hooked up.

Hi Essexboy,

Ran all the scans as asked and have attached the docs. I ran the scans with the ethernet cable connected and both the ethernet and the wireless set to obtain an ip address automatically.

What i did notice when i go into the ethernets tcp ipv4 the box is ticked for obtain an ip address automatically, but the default gateway is shaded out as should be but the address 192.168.1.1 is in the box. If I tick to give it an ip address and then take it out, ok that and then go back in it's back again.

The replys to the ones with out the junk.txt point to a dns problem Here are the replys.

Ron is actually thinking router here ... Most of this is way over my head

The tracert says it is getting to the router and then getting lost. This looks like the router might not want to connect a strange box to the internet. Is this really a router or is it something the cable company gave you? I know here in the US that some cable companies' boxes will only allow one PC to connect at a time. What is the make and model of the router? Do you have the password for the router? I would log into it and look for any filtering or firewalling or security options that might restrict it to a single LAN IP address.

Could we see the same reports for when it has a static address? (Disable the Wireless connection so it doesn't confuse the issue) Are you using the same IP address as the working PC? If so, bump the last digit in the IP address you are assigning to the device up one and see what happens.

Also try putting it back to get an IP automatically then boot into Safe Mode with Networking
(Reboot and when you see the maker's logo, hear a beep or it talks about F8, start tapping the F8 key slowly. Keep tapping until the Safe Mode Menu appears and choose Safe Mode with Networking. Login with your usual login.)

and run the same tests. (You don't need to make 4 separate junk.txt files. The first one uses a single > so it overwrites the old junk.txt file. The rest use >> so they just append to the bottom of the first one.)

Hi Essexboy,

I gave the ethernet a static ip but when I go to ok this I am given a Microsoft TCP/ip Warning.

Mutliple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to a single network (such as an intranet or the internet). They will not function properly when the gateways are on seperate , disjointed networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the internet). Do you want to save this configuration.

I do not want to ok this until your friend advises it's ok.


Could this be because of the 192.168.1.1 fixed in the default gateway that I mentioned earlier?

It is a router provided by the isp they are TalkTalk and It's make is Hauwei Echolife HG521.

I have had a look into the settings and all I can see is A firewall which I disabled but made no difference, It is set to allow access to 32 devices. Only filtering section I noticed was for Wlan but it is not enabled.

I did try to do a ping command from within the routers diagnosics using the ip address the router is repoting to have assigned and it passed but just running an autodiagnose program also within the router. this returns this,

PPPoE status Obtaining the IP address of the PPPoE failed. Please check the PPPoE settings.

Network Status Diagnosis is completed.

Not sure what the settings should be within this section.

What I am seeing is that neither DHCP or static configuration makes a difference. In both cases the result is the same. We get to the router and stop.

Looking at your comment that PPOE is not working tells me that the router is not configured correctly. Do you know the user name and password that should be used on the router on the PPOE link? Try turning the power off, count to 10 slowly then turn it back on.

If that doesn't help then I think it needs to be reset. Usually you do this by holding down the reset button on the back of the router (You may have to use a pin to do this) for 10 seconds then letting go. Then you need to go in and reprogram it with the username/account number and password assigned by talktalk. On a general purpose DSL router there are usually some other settings WAN PORT = DSL ATM PORT, VPI = 8 and VCI = 35 but these settings must already be in your router as TalkTalk says:

All you need from TalkTalk is the wireless network name and password.

Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer.
Type http://192.168.1.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
Enter the username and password and click OK.
Note: The default username and password are both admin (this is case-sensitive).
Enter your TalkTalk username in the Username box, and enter your password in the Password box.
Note: You received these details in your TalkTalk welcome letter. Your username is usually your broadband telephone number followed by @talktalk.net. For example, [email protected].
Select Advanced from the menu on the left and click OK to the warning message.
Select Basic from the menu on the left and then select WAN.
Under MTU set MTU to Manual and set size to 1432.
Click Submit at the end of the page.

Your router is now re-configured. Try connecting to the internet to see if you can get online.

Ok Guys,

I think i've seen enough to convince me the problem does lie within my router, not sure how it's happening. I cannot see anything that looks wrong. My own laptop and blackberry are able to connect to my wireless network with no problem, both automatic ip. The only other thing I can think of is the bt software having a conflict because my router is not a bt product. As previously mentioned I do know that bt software can be pretty restrictive and intrusive. It's designed to get you to buy bt product to use with your network I think.

I've reset router to default the only difference from the setting and the ones you mentioned are in router vpi is set to 0 and not 8 but 0 is the normal setting here for a dsl broadband from what I have read.

At the moment the status of my friends laptop is connecting with ethernet and ip set to automatic. That's new it's never done that. It's connecting with static ip and wireless connection disabled.

Wireless is connecting with static ip but is not connecting with ip set to automatic, the bt help kicks in and I have to re-boot the router then the wireless connects with automatic ip then it connects to the internet. It's this that makes me think bt software has something to do with it also.

Uncheck it then Apply and reboot. Msconfig will come up. There should be a box to check to tell msconfig not to bother you in the future. Check it. Then OK and close msconfig.

That should get keep BT's help from bothering you.

As I mentioned earlier you have Toshiba's ConfigFree Service handling the wireless. You might want to uncheck it in msconfig too

It will be under Services

ConfigFree Service -- C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\CFSvcs.exe (TOSHIBA CORPORATION)

Then let Windows handle the wireless.

I find I have much better luck with wireless when Windows handles the connection. You also might want to try connecting with a different encryption scheme or no encryption (requires changing the config in the router). Not every wireless adapter can handle every wireless encryption. Took my new HP All in One down to my daughter's house and it was unusable with WPA2. Bought a new adapter and it worked fine.


msconfig can also be useful for finding out why a computer is slow booting:
Go to Services tab and click on the box to hide Microsoft Services then uncheck
everything that remains. Go to Startup tab and uncheck everything. OK and
reboot. If it doesn't run faster then go back into msconfig and recheck the
things you turned off. If it helps then go back and turn on half the items each
time until you find the culprit.
