Hi

My windows 98 was working fine.

Then I installed a new samsung hd 80g as the slave.

But now windows gives me a fatal error when starting up.

I am still using the old drive as the startup, the new drive is the slave.

I didn't change any software.

To make the new drive work I made a single partition with fdisk in fat 32,

then formatted.

The drive is regognized, works and saves data.

But the thing is, My pc will not startup in normal mode anymore from the old drive which is the startup. And before I installed the new slave, it was working fine.

It only starts up in safe mode now.

Heres how it crashes:

It posts, checks, then eventually gets to the part when the computer displays the windows asking for your login information.

Immeadiately after passing that stage, it dumps with a fatal error everytime. Can't get past there.

But heres the thing, I did not change any software at at all.

It was working well, then I installed a new hard drive as the slave. Now windows normal mode wont start up.

Could this be an issue about cable select? I am not currently using it because the drive is already recognized and works as it is.

So in summary, the new drive was installed as the slave.

The old drive which is still the startup drive now will not startup.

It fatal errors everytime I get right past the login screen.

I appreciate any advice about this.

Thanks.

P.S. the strange thing is, when i disconnect the new drive, the system will boot fine in normal mode. If i connect it again, then it give me the same fatal error every time right after the login screen. And, in safe mode, boths drive will work.

Right now I have it set for cable select.

Don't really know a lot, but need assistance.

Howdy:

You may need to get a 40 pin/80 wire IDE cable for the connection..

i think it already is a 40 pin 80 wire. the wires are real thin and it has a grey connector in the middle.

not well-versed in this, so thanks for the replies.

Make sure about the cable, then jumper the old hdd to master (put on end of cable) and jumper the new one as slave (goes to middle connector)..

yep already did that before and exact same thing.

the weird thing is both drives work fine in safe mode, but if i try to boot in normal mode i get a fatal error.

then if i disconnect the new drive, i can start fine in normal.

while you are waiting for a solution, here's something you can try:

test the drive with the jumper on each set of pins. I've seen a couple of drives that 'worked' with the jumper in the wrong location.

i did try that too, but it didn't work.

I've been trying stuff all day. I haven't got any closer really yet.

Thanks for looking out though.

When you fdisked and formatted the new drive, was the old drive still installed or did you do it on it's own??

I'm not too knowledgable in this area, but it sounds like this might be a size issue with win98. I'm not sure of the win98 limitations, but 80 GB may be too large. Perhaps one of our experts can explain further, or suggest some other course of action.

instead of cable select did you change the jumpers on the 1st drive to say it was a master with a slave. Did you also change the jumper on the second drive to say it was a slave drive?.
If yes to this
then have you tried setting up
the drive in cmos instead of using auto detect?
