Laptop mouse and keyboard still not working, alas.

Keep Norton off and just use Microsoft Security Essentials for now.

Multiple installed antivirus products can lead to a clash as products fight for access to files which are being opened since they need to be checked for viruses. In general terms, the programs may conflict and cause:
False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to multiple products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

If after we finish you want to reinstall Norton make sure you uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials first and then install Norton.

My two cents worth, I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials to Norton anyway.

I actually wasn't even aware that I still had Norton, so I won't be reinstalling it. I do have two virus scan programs though - AntiMalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. Will those two together cause problems? If so, which do you recommend?

Once I took Norton off, I disabled MS Essentials and AntiMalwareBytes to run ComboFix. Both programs are up and running now. Is that what you were asking in your second most recent post?

Yes it is and MalwareBytes' is antispyware so it can be used with Microsoft Security Essentials. However they may fight one another during startup. If they do please let me know and we will change some settings in both of them so they will work well with each other.

In just a minute I will have another post for you to do to fix the keyboard and mouse issue.

OK we will try to get back your keyboard and mouse now in two steps

Step 1.

OTL Fix

We need to run an OTL Fix

Note: If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or higher installed please disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below. If it still hangs then please uninstall MalwareBytes' and run this fix again.

  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

    :OTL

    :files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\i8042prt.sys|C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\keyboard.inf_f55d5e51\i8042prt.sys /replace

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [createrestorepoint]
    [Reboot]
  • Push Posted Image
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click the OK button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
  • If the machine reboots, the log will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date and the time of the tool run.

Step 2.

After the computer reboots try the keyboard and mouse.

If lthey still do not work, follow these steps to correct the issue. If step 1 corrected it then please let me know in your next post.

Restart the computer.

After the Dell splash screen appears, immediately start tapping the F8 key.

The advanced options window will open. Select Last Known Good Configuration and hit Enter

Once your computer finishes booting please try your keyboard and mouse. Let me know the status of the keyboard and mouse.

Good news! The OTL fix worked.

As entertaining as it was to try to balance laptop + keyboard + mouse + surface for mouse all in my lap, I'm very glad to have functionality restored. Thank you!!!

Computer otherwise seems fine. MS Essentials just found a virus and is cleaning it, but otherwise all is well. No more pop-up internet windows.

Here's the log:

Hi CompCav,

Malwarebytes is now almost constantly putting up reports saying "successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website; type: outgoing, process: ping.exe" And MS Essentials is finding "TrojanDropper" (I have been letting it clean whatever threats it finds; I hope that's the right thing to do).

Scan logs follow:

Malwarebytes is now almost constantly putting up reports saying "successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website; type: outgoing, process: ping.exe" And MS Essentials is finding "TrojanDropper" (I have been letting it clean whatever threats it finds; I hope that's the right thing to do).

You are doing the right thing. I just believe the removal efforts were hampered by the Norton stuff, the Microsoft Security Essentials being on, and the keyboard/mouse issue earlier.

But, I still see evidence of the rootkit infection. Therefore we need to run the following ComboFix and TDSSKiller with freshly downloaded versions.

Step 1.

Delete your current copy of Combofix.

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop * IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here. Please disable MalwareBytes' and Microsoft Security Essentials. This infection is particularly strong and we need to not have any interference from other programs.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

When finished, it produces a log for you.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Re-enable your protection once the log presents on the screen.

Step 2.

TDSSKiller
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to download and then run the application, then click on Change parameters.

    Posted Image
  • Check the boxes beside Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK.

    Posted Image
  • Click the Start Scan button.

    Posted Image
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
  • Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

    Posted Image
  • Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.

A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

Step 3.

  • Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon to run it.
  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top, make sure Standard output is selected.
  • Select Scan all users
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box copy and paste this in:

    netsvcs
    msconfig
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    iexplorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
    C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the QuickScan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.

  • When the scan completes, it will open OTL.Txt in Notepad window on the task bar.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the content of this file and post it with your next reply.

Step 4.

Please post:

ComboFix log
TDSSKiller log
OTL.txt

What problems do you now have?

Also do you have a zip drive to use? We will need one for the next step if the previous post tool runs do not get the rootkit.

Thanks,

Hi CompCav,

I was able to bring my work computer home with me tonight, fortunately. ComboFix is running, doing the same sort of very slow scan that happened the first time (when the mouse stopped working after). It doesn't post any updates in the blue window, just has the top message of "This scan will take approximately 10 minutes." (when I ran the new ComboFix scan earlier today, the window was much more active, with a list of steps completed).

Also, tonight, as with the first time, a message has appeared saying, "Freeware implementation of XCACLS has stopped working"; my only option is "close program."

And I still got the message from ComboFix of "MS Essentials is running," even though I disabled active protection; I thought you'd said before that that particular error message was standard. What did you mean then by "The problem with Microsoft Security Essentials being on?"

I have a backup harddrive and a thumb drive (1 GB).

Many thanks, as always.

I mean that if anything is on it may be contributing to the slowness of the run. ComboFix thinks it is on and this may affect how it is running. But it may just be that this particular infection is so strong that it is fighting to run. With the error message about XCALCS it may stop the run and tell you that your recycle bin is corrupt. If it does not complete try running ComboFix in safe mode. You get to SafeMode by restarting the computer and tapping F8 right after you see the Dell splash screen. Then you select safe mode and hit Enter. Once it finishes booting make sure your MalwareBytes' and MS Security essentials are off and run ComboFix. If neither completes we will go to our next plan of attack.

I have a backup harddrive and a thumb drive (1 GB).

Great

Many thanks, as always.

You are welcome!

All right. Combofix indeed fail last night. So I tried running it in SafeMode. It took a while to scan, then informed me that ZeroAccess Rootkit had been detected on my computer (lucky me). It then asked to reboot - and almost simultaneously, gave me the message that my recycle bin was corrupted. Upon restart, ComboFix did not start, and it did not produce a log for me. It did produce a folder with a whole bunch of files, some of them with todays date (DriverList.txt, for example).

What should I do? Should I run TDSS?

Thanks.

(mouse and keyboard still fine)
