Step 1.

Please go here.

We have done Method 1 and as much of 3 as we can.

Go to Method 2. Click on KB2399238

Under method 2 go to Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 part way down the page.

Click on Click here to view or hide detailed download information on that page.

Then download and install the two X86 packages from that page.

Reboot the computer.

Step 2.

Check windows updates again and install any critical or important updates that show up.

Reboot the computer.

Step 3.

Use the manual download for ie9 to your desktop.

Then disable your antivirus

Click on the package you downloaded to install ie 9.

If it still fails to install. Uninstall your antivirus and any resident antispyware and install ie 9.

After this step re-enable or reinstall your antivirus and any resident antispyware.

Please post the results to me with any error codes you might get

I was unable to complete Step 1 - it told me "the updates do not apply to your system." (at first, I had the 'these updates are not applicable' error message, which I fixed by downloading all new updates).

I tried going ahead and unstalling antivirus/antispyware software, but that didn't work either. Still gets only partway through the install process.

For Step 1 here are the files:

For step one here are the direct links to the two files:

Description of the Windows Graphics, Imaging, and XPS Library (KB971512 )

X86 package for Vista 32-bit

Platform Update Supplement for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008 (KB2117917 )

x86 package 2 for Vista 32-bit

Then try to do Step 2 and Step 3 again if these two files install. If they do not install just come back to tell me.

Thanks for your patience as we work through this issue.

Nope, same error message: "these updates do not apply to your system." They were identical to the two files already on my desktop.

In other news, Windows Update is doing the same thing as it was before we fixed it - IE 9 is always there, but also the same security update that always reappears no matter how many times I tell it to install. KB2633171.

Step 1.

Was this computer originally on XP and upgraded to Vista or was it Vista when it was bought new?

Step 2.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site ro just reopen the one you have if it is still on your desktop.

Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check
Posted Image
Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC
Posted Image
On the start repairs tab select advanced mode and click start
Posted Image
Select the items in the red surround (remove the ticks from the rest ), you will have to go down the page to get the Repair MSI ticked (pictured in picture 2 below) and tick restart system when finished then click Start

Please let me know the status of updates.

Step 3.

We need to check the sfc log to see if any of the files are not getting refreshed properly.
  • Click on All Programs and Accessories, then right click on Command Prompt and click on Run as administrator. (See screenshot below)
    Posted Image
  • Copy the line below and paste it at the command prompt. Then press Enter

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
  • The file sfcdetails.txt will now be on your desktop. Please open it , Edit | select all | copy and paste it in your next reply.

Step 4.

Please post:

sfcdetails.txt

Sorry for the slow reply; I've not been at home much this week.

This machine has always been run with Windows Vista, and never on XP.

Microsoft Updates is now giving me the error message "Windows could not search for new updates," error code 80070490.

The results show two files that are corrupt (not infected) and that there is not a replacment on your hard drive.

There is also one other file that we will need to replace but we can do that by rebuilding it.

Sometimes sfc /scannow has to be run multiple times in order to fix everything so we may need to re run it from the repair your computer command prompt.

While I am collecting the files for you could you re run sfc /scannow from here:

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt
[*]Select Command Prompt
[*]Now at the prompt type sfc /scannow
[*]Reboot into normal mode when you finish and please get me a copy of sfcdetails.txt again.[/list]

  • Click on All Programs and Accessories, then right click on Command Prompt and click on Run as administrator. (See screenshot below)
    Posted Image
  • Copy the line below and paste it at the command prompt. Then press Enter

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
  • The file sfcdetails.txt will now be on your desktop. Please open it , Edit | select all | copy and paste it in your next reply.

Do you have a Windows Vista install disk?

Step 1.

Please download the attached zip file to your desktop and extract the two files to your desktop.
Attached File  autochk_tcpmon.zip   244.67KB   115 downloads

Step 2.

We will use an OTL fix to replace these files.

Note: If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or higher installed please disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below. If it still hangs then please uninstall MalwareBytes' and run this fix again.

  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

    :OTL

    :files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    C:\Windows\System32\autochk.exe|C:\Users\Sabrina\Desktop\autochk.exe /replace
    C:\Windows\System32\tcpmon.ini|C:\Users\Sabrina\Desktop\tcpmon.ini /replace

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [createrestorepoint]
  • Push Posted Image
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click the OK button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
  • If the machine reboots, the log will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date and the time of the tool run.

Step 3.

Try windows updates to see if it goes through at least for everything except IE 9.0 If it is working stop here and let me know.

If it still does not then do a full run fo Windows repair (2 through 4 steps)

For Start Repairs

Select Custom Mode

Uncheck the following items:

Repair MDAC/MS Jet
Repair Missing Start Menu Icons Removed By Infections
Repair Icons
Repair CD/DVD Missing/Not Working
Set Windows Services to Default Startup

Make sure Restart System When Finished is checked and click Start

After it reboots check your updates.

Step 4.

If Windows Updates is not working prepare a bootable disk of MS Defender. Other wise just send me a message that it is working

Download the 32 bit version here.

Here are detailed instructions to create the bootable CD here. you should select On a blank CD or DVD.

Reboot by pressing the F key to Boot Menu and select your CD/DVD drive and hit ENTER. Follow the prompts to run the scan, when it completes reboot the computer and check the windows updates.

I tried to run the first step, but it kept giving me an error message: "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

But when I restart, I just get the same message.

Any tips, or should I start with the next step (e.g. run it in normal mode).

All tasks completed, but Windows Update is still not running successfully. My computer didn't seem to like the OTL step; upon reboot, it ran a scan to check discks for compatibility. It started normally after that.

Here's the OTL file:

The system came with Norton, which I believe we uninstalled near the beginning of this process. I currently only have MS Essentials running.

And Windows Repair ran just fine.

Did we use the norton removal tool to insure it was completely gone?? If not here it is for you to run but if we already ran it just skip to checkdisk:

Norton removal tool. Download the tool to your desktop and run it. It will ask you to reboot. Please do so.

Also I want to see the check disk results.

Open The Event Log...
Start -> Control Panel (Classic View) -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer (3rd choice)

The ChkDsk Log is found in....
Windows Logs (2nd choice on left) -> Application (1st sub-choice)

This will display a number of information logs in the center pane, many of them from the most recent Windows startup. You will notice the 1-2 hour time difference in events if you rebooted to scan (time spend running chkdsk). This should help you identify the startup events after the scan...

About half way down the list of logs, look for the item Wininit in the source column. This will contain the log data for the ChkDsk scan prior to the boot. Please copy the log and paste it in your next reply!
