I have a mess here on this Acer Aspire 3610 laptop belonging to a friend.

Fist at various times in task manager I see many copies of iexplorer.exe and wltuser.exe being created. This seems to be trigered by enabling the internet connection on the machine, or even by opening a browser, Chrome or Internet Explorer with the internet disabled.

There is also, sometimes but not always, indian sounding music playing from the machine and talking that I can not make out.

If I open Google chrome then I will see many chrome.exe processes created and slowly all go away except the one.

I just tried to open Internet Explorer with no Internet connction and it creatd a whole bunch of xpnetdiag.exe processes. After a few moments they all went away but one which I suspect is there to diagnose the connection problem.

After booting up the computer there will be many strange processes in task manager. I can delete them and sometimes they try to come back but after deleteing them a few times they don't come back.

At various times it will also creat many other strange names, but it seems to only do it when it feels like it. I can't make it do it right now. If I reboot it will do it but then I can't do anything with the computer for about 10 minutes. Even then it is very slow, but after awhile, if I delete all the strange processes and the iexplorer.exe and wltuser.exe it will run about normal speed.

It seems to have done something to AVG. I can't update it. It continously asks me to reboot to install the updates and when I reboot AVG comes back up with the small yellow triangle on the tray icon and requests a reboot to install the updates, it will do this for ever. It will also not let me remove AVG. I have tried several times.

I have tried to install Microsoft Essentials but it says windows does not pass WGA, but the lady who owns this laptop says she bought the laptop new with windows XP and has never had a WGA problem before. XP was set to do auto updates when I checked and they all seem to be done.

I am also using free versions of Malwarebytes, which removed 4 trojans the first time I ran it, and SuperAntiSpyware which removed two other trojans and some adware the first time I ran it. I have logs of both of these if needed. Fully updated, both programs now find nothing in later scans. I had a hard time updating SupraAtiSpyware. It downloaded and uncompresed the updates but was hours trying to do the very last step of the update. I left it and went to bed and when I got up in the morning it was done so I rescanned and it found nothing.

I think that is everything.

ComboFix
:!: If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy. :!:

:!: It must be saved to your desktop, do not run it :!:

:!: Disable your Antivirus software when downloading or running Combofix. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well. See: http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html

Download and Save this file -- to your Desktop -- from either of these two sources:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Doubleclick on ComboFix to start the program.

* :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.

* A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix. Allow it to install the Recovery Console then Continue. When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit and answer 'Yes' to save changes.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Download TDSSKiller:
http://support.kaspe.../tdsskiller.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it.
Double click on TDSSKiller.exe (Vista or Win 7 must right click and Run As Admin)
If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Run TDSSKiller again but this time:
before you hit the Scan hit Change Parameters and check the two items under Additional Options. OK then Scan.
In this mode it is prone to false positives so do not change the SKIP option to DELETE unless it says TDSS.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
uncheck trace disk IO calls
Click the "Scan" button to start scan
On completion of the scan (Note if the Fix button is enabled (not the FixMBR button) and tell me) click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

A box has poped up just a couple of minutes after starting Combofix saying,
"this machine does not have microsoft windows recovery console installed. Alternatly an existing copy of the recovery console may be present but requires updating.
without it Combofix shall not attempt the fixing of some serious infections.
Select yes to have combofix download/install it.
Note this requires an active internet connection.

--------NOTE----------------

I did all updates to windows just a couple of days before this virus/malware thing happened, so I am quite sure it is there and updated. Something must be messing with it.

If I plug the internet connection in AND it opens Internet Explorer to do the download it will be nearly imposible. As soon as I plugin the lan cable OR open Explorer the computer becomes very, very slow for a least 1/2 hour then calms down. Do you know if it will open Explorer to do this download? If not I could leave Combofix as is and plug in the lan cable and wait 1/2 hour till things settle down and then click yes on combo fix. If Combofix opens Explorer to do the download it will slow the laptop down again for 1/2 hour or so. I don't know if Combofix will continue trying the download for that long. To connect the laptop to the Internet I disable the internet on my other machines so I am unconnected in the event of anything else like this happening. Would these things get on my desktops if I pluged them in, or am I being paranoid?

I am now using a USB stick to move everything you asked to the laptop from my desktop machine. I then move it all to the desktop on the laptop to run as requested.

Also should note the 15 minutes we disabled AVG for is running out or has run out.

Johnnie

15 minutes is not enough time. We need to turn AVG's resident shield off. See if this will work:

Open the AVG program
Click the Anti-Virus icon
Un-tick the option Enable Resident Shield
Save the changes

Combofix does not use IE to connect for its updates and downloads. (The Recovery Console is not normally updated by windows updates) You might find that it works better in Safe Mode with Networking:

(Reboot and when you see the maker's logo, hear a beep or it talks about F8, start tapping the F8 key slowly. Keep tapping until the Safe Mode Menu appears and choose Safe Mode with Networking. Login with your usual login.)

I went to safe mode with networking and ran combofix. It downloaded and installed the recovery console.

Then it continued on and is now saying:

ROOTKIT!!

Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine?

Should I click OK?

Should I route it back into safe mode or just normal bootup?

I guess I stll grab the log file,

and then continue on with the next step, Download TDSSKiller: and so forth or are there new instructions from this point?

It won't hurt tho it will take a bit longer to do the scan. The Avast scan often finds stuff we otherwise wouldn't see.

I did the aswMBR scan with the avast virsus database, it took 3 hours, and then I did MalwareBytes (which found nothing so "remove selected" was not necessary) and then loaded the first copy and paste into OTL and ran it. But it started and just sat there on the bottom of the screen it says: "Processing 034 - HKLM BootExecute: (00DBS) ...". It did not seem to be doing anything but I left it and went to bed. I got up this morning and it is exactly the same as when I went to bed. Nothing happening and same thing at the bottom of the screen.

So what now?

There was no log from the last one you gave me after I rebooted, is it on the machine somewhere? I don't see anywhere in OTL to save a log.

Both logs should be on your desktop or int he same folder where otl.exe lives. Probably overwrote your original logs.

OTL is on my desktop, I have a folder for this step which I will put any logs from this step in when I get them. The first time I ran OTL It locked up and there was no log. The second time I ran it there was a request to reboot which I did, I checked the desktop then and I double checked it now and there is no log file.

OK, I just checked the hard drive and on the C drive there is a "OTL/moved files" folder with several folders under that. In the moved files folder I see a date and time log file that fits the last scan. So that must be the missing log file. I will save it. I am not sure where this next one will turn up.
