No sure where to start exactly, but suddenly a laptop I got in Nov 2011 has started shutdowns out of nowhere. It seems that shortly after I bought a USB mouse it began but at the same time I started seeing messages from Webroot. I don't BELIEVE I installed this program and I have run the uninstallation and it's no longer in my program list. The computer is running slowly, freezing and shutting down out of nowhere (including when it is in sleep mode for the night), in fact it did it as I started this thread. Since I have no way of getting a screen shot of the BSOD I literally took a picture with my camera and am attaching it to this post. I am doing this since it is telling me the shutdown was caused by BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER and the only thing plugged in via USB is the mouse. I have run the OTL Quick scan and am running it again since the shutdown lost the logfile, that is also posted here as requested. I have 3 USB ports and it does this on all ports. I have run Malware Antibytes as well and it found one small trojan (I don't remember which one but I can post the logfile if it will help) **Edited to add that my Shockwave player usually crashes when the computer freezes. Don't know if this is important but I'm trying to be as detailed as possible** So in summary:

Sudden shutdown
BSOD
Slow running and freezing
Only new thing is the USB mouse (I'm obsessing over this, I know)

Now i'll sit and wait patiently for your directions. Thanks, in advance.

Hello ColtsFan18,
:welcome:. My name is godawgs and I will be assisting you with your Virus / Malware issues.

I am currently still in training and my posts have to be approved by an expert so please expect a delay between my posts.

I will start working on your Malware issues. This may, or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.
If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then carefully follow all future instructions:

I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same.
Because of this, you must reply within four days. If you haven't replied within that time, the topic will be closed! If you need additional time to complete things, just let me know.
  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • All tools must be run from an account with Administrator priviledges.
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, so you can check off each step as you complete it.
Also, part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer, installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry or running any tools, unless instructed to do so. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date (if possible)!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post unless directed otherwise.
  • Lastly, Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. Some infections are so severe that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but, sadly, it does happen.
In light of this be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

You said that you don't believe you installed Webroot. It is a Anti-Virus product. You might recognize it as Secure Anywhere. It's not a free program so I'm pretty sure you had to purchase it to install it.
And you also have Trend Micro Anti-Virus installed and running.
Having more than one Anti-Virus program is never a good idea. Two or more AV's running at the same time can do more harm than good. We will address this shortly. But this dosen't have anything to do with the BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER message you are getting.

First a question. The log you posted was from the second run of OTL. Why didn'y you post the first log?
You didn't include the Extras.txt log in your post. The Extras.txt log should be in the C:\Users\Tammy\Downloads folder. I will need you to post it.

Step-1

Run aswMBR
  • Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe file to run it. (Windows /7 users: Right click the file and click Run as Administrator. If you get a UAC window, allow the file to run.
  • Click the "Scan" button to start the scan
    Posted Image
  • On completion of the scan click save log. Save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
    Posted Image
NOTE: When you run aswMBR, if it is shutdown automatically, then it is most likely the infection detecting that aswMBR is running and terminating it. In this situation you should rename executable to iexplore.exe and try it again.

Step-2.

Things I need in your next reply:
1. The Extras.txt log
2. The aswMBR log

I didn't post the first log because when I was running the scan the computer went into a sudden shutdown and the log never saved. *Quote* I have run the OTL Quick scan and am running it again since the shutdown lost the logfile. *End quote** Here is the extras log you requested:

Hi ColtsFan 18,

I have run the OTL Quick scan and am running it again since the shutdown lost the logfile.

Sorry, I missed that.
I don't see much of anything in your logs. There are a couple of files we need to have checked out, but I don't think they are malware.

Step-1.

Let's check out the USB problem.
Do you have the old mouse available and does the computer work with it installed? If you do and it does...
  • Click the Start Orb.
  • Right click Computer and click Properties.
  • On the page that comes up, under Tasks on the left hand side click Device Manager. The Device Manager page will come up.
  • If there is a yellow exclamation mark ! or red X next to Mice and other pointing devices and you still have the old mouse, please right click on the device with the yellow ! or red x beside it and click Uninstall. Then reconnect the old mouse and if the system doesn't find it automatically, reboot. If the message went away, reboot again and see if it comes back. If that solved the BSOD problems, let me know.
  • If the yellow exclamation mark ! or red X is next to anything else, let me know what it is.?

Step-2.

Things I need in the next reply:
1. Let me know what happened in Step 1.

That OK, I miss more than I'd like to admit on a regular basis ;) This is the only mouse I have bought, prior to that I was using the touchpad which I loathe with the passion of a thousand burning suns. There are no x's or exclamation points associated with the mouse or other pointing devices though. Now it hasn't gone into shutdown for about 3 days, the only thing I have done differently is unplugging the mouse before putting the machine to sleep at night. I can't believe a simple mouse could force a shutdown, give me the BSOD and all that jazz but I suppose since it was an inexpensive mouse it could have faulty wiring and cause issues, but that would just be too stupid for words...

Hello again,

Thanks for the information. Your profile page didn't specify if you had a desktop or a laptop and I assumed desktop. again. Course your profile page also shows you running Windows XP. You should probably update that to reflect the Vista 64bit OS. Information like that really can help us.
I still want to check those files out and there are a couple of other things we need to do. I'm gonna smoke all this over with my instructor and I'll be back to you.
Thanks.

OMG! I never thought about my profile!!! Good grief, I'll go update that. We still have the desktop, this is a small cheap back up in case the big machine goes down, and I ASSumed you could tell what I was using from the Bios in the scans :( Thanks for your time and I'll await your reply.

Hi ColtsFan18

I know you said that the BSOD problem happens on all 3 USB ports. Please tell me how you verified that. Did you plug the mouse into each port and then put the computer in sleep mode? Does the BSOD happen every time you bring the computer out of sleep mode when the mouse has been left attached to the port? Does the laptop have a webcam?
We're trying to determine if the problem is isolated to one USB port or if it might be the whole USB card.

When the problem happened this time, had the mouse been unplugged while the laptop was in sleep mode? The .xml file in C:\Users\Tammy\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-47424-0.sysdata.xml will open in a browser window if you open it (double click it). Please open that file and copy/paste the contents and include it with the information I have requested.

Thanks!

I know it has happened on all ports because each time it happened I plugged it onto a different port figuring it would be fine, after a week it had happened on all three. The mouse was plugged in on each occasion and was put into sleep mode. On a few (not all) occasions it just went into shutdown on it's own without being put into sleep mode, it was while I was just working on something. The sudden shutdown has NOT occurred with the mouse unplugged. I'd say the BSOD comes up 60% of the time, other times it just shuts down and when it's restarted it gives me the message that Windows was not shut down properly and gives me choices on how to restart windows, I always choose "Start Windows normally" I DO have a webcam but have only played with it 3 or 4 times, it was not in use during the time of any of these shutdowns. I'm not sure about opening the file location you posted. I tried opening it from here by copying and pasting and when that didn't work I went to the location manually and it wasn't listed unless it was in hidden files. I shall look for it after I post this to see if I can find it in the hidden files and post it then.

Edited to add: I don't see that file to C&P in the specified location or upon any searches, not sure what to do now, I'll await your instructions.

Hi ColtsFan18,

Thanks for the info. The reason I asked about the Webcam is because I have read some instances with the exact symptoms and the problem was traced to the Webcam. Since you don't use the webcam very much let's temporarily disable it and see what happens. I also want you to upload your system information. This will give me more information on the Mfg. and model, the BIOS and other stuff.

Step-1.

  • Click the Start Orb and type msinfo32.exe and press the ENTER key.
  • On the System Information page, in the left hand column click the + beside Components.
  • In the expanded list click Problem Devices.
  • If anything shows up in the right column let me know what it is.
  • Next , at the top of the left column, click on System Summary.
  • At the very top left of the window click File.
  • Click Save.
  • In the Save AS window, either change the location to th desktop or write down the location where you saved the file.
  • In the File name box type a descriptive name like System Info.
  • Save the file as file type (*NFO) and click the Save button.
You will need to upload that file in your next post.

Step-2.

Temporarily disable the Webcam

  • Click the Start Orb.
  • Type devmgmt.msc and push the ENTER key. Click Continue on the UAC window. The Device Manager window will come up.
  • Click the + beside Imaging devices
  • Right click on the Webcam device and click Disable. OK any prompts.
  • Close the Device Manager window and reboot

Step-3.

Things for your next reply
1. The system info. file
2. Did you disable the Webcam?

Thanks

Hello again, sorry for the delay in responding, life got in the way. Nothing showed up in the Problem devices deal, I have disabled the Webcam and I have attached the System Info file you requested. Additionally, I set the machine down yesterday forgetting it was on with the mouse plugged in and it went into hibernate (so I thought) when I looked at it again, it had gone into shutdown and rebooted with the BSOD offering me a new message. Sadly, not paying attention since I've seen it so many times it wasn't until I hit enter did I notice that the actual failure message was different and it said something to the effect of USB failure and now when I plug the mouse in I get the balloon in the bottom right corner telling me the device is unrecognizable... again, it goes back to the mouse. If I get that same screen again, I will take note of the error and post it, unless there is a way to pull up an events log which I'm sure is on here SOMEWHERE. Let me know.

OK.... went to upload the .nfo file and I'm given a message that I'm not permitted to upload this kind of file. Plan B? :)

As far as the .nfo file, right click on the file---put your mouse cursor over Send To in the pop up list and click Compressed (zipped) folder. Now try to upload the .zip file.

For the error logs, the Minidump files would probably be more helpful. To see if you have any look in the C:\Windows directory for a file named Minidump.dmp. Let me know if it is there.

We are thinking that the mouse has fried your USB ports. If you know of anyone else with a USB mouse compatible with Windows 7, borrow it, plug it in and see if there's any difference. Also, if you have another use device (like a USB thumb drive or a USB printer) plug it in and see if you get the same problem.

If you got the laptop new in Nov. 2011 it should still be under warranty.

OK, I have attached the System Info as a Zip file I have also posted a screenshot... this is the Minidump files I have thus far. I can't open them, apparently I don't have a program compatible to open this type of file extension. I have a USB cord that goes to a card reader and I tried it on all 3 ports and it works perfectly so I'm guessing now, that after all this, it's the mouse cord that is actually fried and I'm lucky at this point that it hasn't destroyed the computer itself. I'll wait to hear any further thoughts you might have.

Hi ColtsFan18,

We need to look at the last couple of minidump files.

Also I want you to permanently disconnect the problem mouse. It should still be under warranty so you can return it and get a new USB mouse, maybe a different one, or maybe you could borrow a Windows 7 compatable USB mouse. If the replacement mouse works without problems for a day or two then you can re-enable the webcam. Just follow the directions in post 11 Step 2 and click Enable. If the problem returns it's the webcam.

Step-1.

Run WhoCrashed

Download WhoCrashed from this link
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
  • Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
  • Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
  • Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
  • Click Analyze
  • It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes
WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply.

Step-2.

Things for your next reply:
1. The WhoCrashed report
2. Tell me what you decided about the mouse
