Canoscan 3000f 201 error

When I Preview or Scan a document the view window fills up with misaligned zigzags, the lamp carrier freezes at the 98% point, the system sits and thinks for five to ten minutes then emits the standard 201 and TWAIN error messages.

How do I fix this error? I have Windows XP SP3 on an Athlon 64 3000+ 2 Ghz processor with 2Gb of RAM and a BT Internet HomeHub II on the neighbouring USB port.
