My Windows XP was running slow so I decided to restart the OS with the Window XP CD. When I did so, the internet wasn't detected along with the sound not working. I believe that it's just my internet and sound card needing to be reinstalled but I'm not sure. Any ideas of what the problem may be?

I presume this means a NEW clean install does it.

If so and the XP CD is SP1 you will have a long period of updating. Not quite as liong if it is SP2 and even less of course if it is SP3
What you need to do now is to go to either the manufacturers site if it is a branded computer ie Dell HP etc.
Download the chipset drivers - install those first
Then the LAN, audio and graphics of the latest version available for your computer and of course configuring your search for XP.
Obviously you will need to start by downloadfing to another computer and then to this one with a usb flash pen., until you can get a connection.

If the computer is not branded go to the motherboard site and do the same, unless the graphics, audio and/or LAN are separate cards in which case go to the manufacturer
of those components.

DO NOT FORGET to check that you have anti-virus installed before browisng on this computer, otherwise all your work may well be in vain, if you fall victim to Malware.

I'm running off of Ubuntu Linux right now so what scans could i use to insure that the downloads have no viruses attached to them?

I am talking about the antivirus you need to check that you have on the XP computer.

Once you install the driver for the LAN and then use THAT computer for the rest of the downloads of XP updates.

If you have reinstalled from the XP CD, then you will not have an AV program at all if it is a Microsoft CD

If it is an OEM CD ie: Dell etc then you may have one bit it will be only a 30 day offer and even that may not NOW be current.

The downloads of the drivers from the computer manufacturers or the motherboard site will not have viruses.
